Shelia, Logan has never been over-corrected for using the bathroom (accept when we almost got run over). Once he has gone, the bike doesn't make him go again unless he has extra. I don't know how to make him go before, as he won't go in our yard. I would just walk him to the park but I cannot during school hours, its actually the school grounds. This neighborhood is not a good place to walk, so in order to find a possible spot for him to go before the run I'd have to walk somewhere far away. You'd have to live here I guess. Even on walks, I wait for Logan to poop before we play or train...so its always a party "go poopy....yay good poopy".....he's very very very particular though about where. I need him to go where I say more than when. Thanks for you helps, that's exactly what I need.

Duane, yeah on walks its way easier for me to see that he's about to dump so I just say nope, come on and jog with him to a suitable place rather than the middle of the sidewalk. As for making him go in the same spot, that would be ideal. I've tried waiting him out before, but he just waits and whines and complains but won't do it. I don't want to harm his health by waiting him out. Some people advocate using paper matches...definitely not in public. If that's safe, I dunno, despite what my neighbors might think, it could be worth it to get him on track.

Tresa, don't mean to beat a dead horse but just one more thing on the "stubborn" issue and then hopefully someone will chime in about the matches. Sorry can't help you there.

But dogs as a species, dogs as individual breeds, male dogs, females dogs, Dutchies, Chihuahuas, they all have two things completely in common with us humans - they eat, and they poop and pee (well I guess that's three).

They're not born with elimination hang ups and don't develop them based on breed. Just like people. Some people don't like (some refuse) to pee in the woods. But something has caused that. Maybe they peed on their new high heels and were walking around in wet nylons, maybe the next time a mosquito bit their ass and don't get me started with the tissue issues.

No one was looking for demons but Logan has one. He will not poop in your yard.

How it came to this is completely irrelevant. But...what if he was mid dump in your yard when a car back fired, spinning rocks with its tires and one hit him just as a thunder storm cracked off a big one. Or mid dump and any other number of things that had a potential to leave an impact.

And now your frustration, with how he's chosen to deal with it, must be awfully confusing for the big guy.

And I don't know, biking with a dog in the middle of a busy road sounds kind of dangerous to me to begin with, the sidewalk not being an option, from what you're saying.

While you're training this bark, if that's the case, you're still going to have figure out a way to stay safe and avoid a situation like this recent close call.

Personally, I like the idea of going back and retraining the command. Great opportunity to figure out a "cool" new word. Got any child hood bullies you could name it after or on a more positive note, I always like "Pretty Pink Ponies". Name it something fun and have a great time getting him used to it.

Tresa My GF's American Eskimo does the same thing on walks, there's no warning he stops on a dime and poops instantly and this is after taking him to a spot that we want him to go, I think its a timing thing you gotta go you gotta go.

Zoey will not go poop in the back yard and doesn't like to pee there either, don't know if its the bad grass or what but she doesn't even like to get her toy off it if thrown there. I'm thinking something to do with the raccoons but only a guess.

Has anyone actually trained there dog to go on command, I mean go any where any time you command?

I have a potty command but it is more or less a timing thing knowing my dogs schedule.

Ah Tresa, I can't improve upon CJs post but I know where you and I disconnected. I think the bike thing was a one up; that wasn't what I would consider an over-correction. I am thinking more on the lines of your frustration with Logan's inconsistant bathroom habits and how it sounded like you thought he has control and is picking when and where out of a sense of stubborness.

With all my crap experience , I have come to realize a dog's dump is his treasure. There is something primal about the choice of the spot and it also makes them extremely sensitive to the surrounding environment which could include you and your annoyance picked up as a correction by Logan who now is not so much stubborn as confused about where it is safe to go. If that makes sense it is what I was referring to as an over-correction.

However; if you should choose to follow CJ's suggestion of where's the Pretty Pink Pony? I would have to think twice about if Logan wouldn't be better off in a more macho household

Well he's never been shy about pooping, he'll crap right in the middle of bad thunderstorm. All kinds of things happen when we walk. He even pooped in Manhattan on the side walk without missing a beat. But rarely he goes in the backyard, he has to be away from the house.

When I say "ok go poopy" he immediately looks for a spot, it could take 5 seconds or 10 minutes but he will go. So he knows what to do but he doesn't crap on a dime when I say so. I dunno how to teach that. There's no stress. And like I said before I know he needs to (you can tell by their butthole sorry) but no not right where we are, he has to find the "right" spot. I don't say anything to him or complain...and I'm just telling you how it is. That's what he does.

I just expect it from him and when we walk, he poops first then training and stuff. Its just not compatible with biking. I could just hook up the walky-dog to his collar (instead of using the leash) and there's no way he would stop then. Sounds harsh, that's basically the same as mushers do.

Here's some good news, I worked on "speak" yesterday by barking at him until he barked and I clicked it. He's getting it.

One more thing, very important I meant to say....his peculiarity about the exact spot is all about marking over certain other dogs. He is obsessed with marking over other dogs. Pee isn't as much of an issue I can make him squat and pee in the backyard in one spot, but poop....forget it.

Marking over other dogs poop with poop or msrking pee with pee or pee on poop?

I've seen dogs mark with pee over pee or even pee over poop but not the poop on poop.

He marks over their pee or their poop with either of his. He'll even poop on a tree or bush. I know somebody who's Sm Fox Terriers do the same. My mixed breed did it too and even scratched the ground afterwards.

Here is the info on the match stick trick. It is an old show ring trick. Not something that I would do...but it's been done for years.
