Offering you another puppy that has been fighting with a litter mate!
You have another dog now. Is this really a good start?
One fight can often make a young dog/pup be very defensive in the presence of another dog. It can be fixed by an experienced person but!
To many negatives going on here. I'd pass on this ...."breeder".

Oh, boy, things are getting curioser and curioser! From my point of view, there were a couple of concerns from the beginning of this thread, and I just wanted to make sure you had thought everything through completely. Now, there are many actual red flags concerning this so-called breeder and the various dogs you are being offered.
Again, I'm not trying to talk you in or out of anything, because this is just a discussion board on the Internet and I don't know you, your situation, or the dogs involved, but I can't help thinking it may be time to go back to square one and reassess.
One thing you may want to do, Jon, is post an introduction of yourself in the bio section I've linked, and give us an idea of what your previous experience with dogs is and what your goals for a future GSD (or any other breed) might be.

Then, some members may be able to help guide you to the proper resources. There are very good breeders out there, and there are also very good rescue organizations. You've mentioned a few things, but at this point, I don't know what direction to steer you in, so a little more information might be helpful.
So good luck in whatever you decide, but I think it can't hurt to continue doing your homework, researching, and asking questions, here and elsewhere!

Jon,
'You gotta know when to hold'm, know when to fold'm, know when to walk away, know when to run.'
An hour and a half drive for this drama ain't a good bet, in my opinion.
There are probably GSD rescues in your area. If you want a good GSD without paying an arm and a leg, check them out.
Two of my rescues have their papers, one the 'pinks' from Germany one AKC, and they are both terrific mutts. Put another way, I could never have afforded either of these dogs. And both were under a year old when given up for adoption.
It amazes me when I see the dogs that are given up for adoption.
Due diligence.
As you have noted, we all have our slants on dogs. I am an unabashed proponent of fostering and adoption. There are lots of dogs, and in my subjective experience, an adopted dog seems to be 'grateful' for its chance to be with a family. I know it ain't scientific but it is a reflection of my experience and perception.
Good luck.
Mike A.

Agreed on your assessment of rescue dogs mike....
Funny thing hearing you guys talking about an hour and a half drive ...around here that is the minimum to get anywhere...

Good advice from Cheri. I'd cool my jets. The right dog will come along, but it may not be when you're expecting it.
In the meantime, I'd peruse all the info here about GSDs, working dogs, etc. Learn as much as you can so that, when the time does come, you and your family are well-equipped to make an informed decision, and hopefully it won't be a hit-or-miss for you.
I'd also suggest that you visit some breeding operations and/or sport clubs in your area. This would be a good chance to get some exposure to a wide spectrum of temperaments and types. Who knows; when you tell the dog people what you have in mind, you might get some tips on some dogs available for rehoming.

Any news, Jon? Just curious to know if you've gotten one of the dogs, in which case we'd love to hear all about it, or if you've decided to hold off or go in a different direction.

We decided to hold off for now.. too many unknowns and inconsistencies with that particular deal.
Still looking, and still learning (been perusing the rest of the site!)!
I appreciate everyone's advice and suggestions!! Thanks for everything!
