I never ask a vet about diet or training.
Their knowledge about diet usually comes from Hills or some other major dog food company so what do you think you'll hear about when you have diet issues!?
Knowledge about a dog's health never has had anything to do with training or even basic manners.
Luckily, my experiences with my vets have been much different than you guys'. I've had two vets in 35+ years. Both have a wide range of knowledge about nutrition from treating many animals over many years. Both, but especially my current vet, have some familiarity with working dogs. When I discuss diet with my current vet, the info he shares is current and relevant, and he does not "push" any particular program. He will tell me if he feels something is not right for my dog. Both are long-standing members of their respective communities and therefore know most of the breeders and trainers in the area.
"IMHO, that's how you find the best dog people. Rather than depending on some ad to steer you to someone that can help, do a little legwork. Get out to the local trials and events, even if you're not competing. Be around dog people. Ask questions and listen. Talk "dogs" at your vet's office and at the pet store. Ignore the prices. Find out who the good dog people respect."
I did not mean to infer that you could ask the tech at the receptionist's desk and find out where to take your dog for training. Someone who refers you to Petco (with a muzzle) is not someone to be taken seriously. If I couldn't trust my vet's education and experience, I would simply move on.
