When I get up the courage, I may watch some of the movies mentioned or clips posted here, or read some of the books, but I'm not quite ready yet. (A few of them I have read or seen a long time ago.)
Candi already mentioned "Lassie Come Home," the movie, but this three-parter from the "Lassie" TV series has stuck with me since it aired for the first time in 1962. When I have some time, I'd like to rewatch the whole thing, but if you want to see a happy ending to a sad dog story, fast-forward to 57:45 and watch the last four or five minutes. I'm blubbering and bawling -- again!

eta: Of course, for those who might want to watch the whole thing, I've gone and given away the ending -- but I guess it's not really a spoiler to tell you it ended well. It was the "Lassie" TV show, after all, and as far as I can remember, they always ended well. But this sure was a tear-jerker of a happy ending.

That was SO GOOD! Watching it just now made me remember as if it was yesterday watching it on TV with my parents and my brother and all my sisters .... more than half a century ago!!
I love the threads here about dog movies and dog books. Whether they are reminders from long ago or info about something new -- whether they are cheering or heartbreaking or both -- they are always good threads.
P.S. The Art of Racing in the Rain is on my Kindle, and Kelly's vivid posts have prompted me to read it again. (I bookmarked the thread, too, to remind me about other books I haven't read in ages.)

Lassie in 62?
Didn't that air in the early or mid 50s?
I'll have to look up "The Art of Racing in the rain".
Speaking of "Lassie Come Home" does anyone remember "Gypsy Colt"?
I remember being pretty small at the drive - in so probably in the early 50s.
It was pretty much a horse version of "Lassie Come home".
Another horse one was "Champion the Wonder Horse" about Gene Autry's horse Champion.

Yes, the TV series three-parter aired in 1962 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lassie_(season_8)
I kinda (vaguely) recall Gypsy Colt ... but really just the title. It was the drive-in for me, too. LOL (I imagine the drive-in was probably number one on the short list of where you could take seven kids in their pajamas -- and pay for just the grownups -- and pack a picnic basket.)
I think I was really small, and I don't remember the story at all. Was it good?
I emailed my two kids tonight about The Art of Racing in the Rain. I remembered that most of my family (my sisters, me, my kids, etc. -- all adults) all read it around the same time, recommending it to each other.
One of my kids emailed back : "Even when it was sad, it was still uplifting and satisfying" and the other said "It was a wonderful and amazing book and only sad for a bit. Totally 100% worth the read. One of my favorite books."
I loved it too. No question that it was very sad. It was definitely as sad to me as Kelly said. But it was so good. (And it was very funny, too.)
Per Google (from the review below) :
"A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life…as only a dog could tell it."

I'm really glad that Kelly posted about it. I think she started a round of re-reading among my family members. :-)

There where were "only" 5 of us by the early 50s but yes, those days were very memorable.
When my daughters were young I had a 62 Chevy Carryall (Suburban).
I had welded in the third row seat mounts backwards so we could sit in the back with the back doors open.
Snacks and soda cooler right there with us.

Oh, right ... I guess there were only 4 or so of us kids by then too. Of course my parents had a station wagon. lol
Love that way-back seat arrangement you had!

Fury was a great one here also.
Another horse and a kid TV show that was really popular was "My Friend Flicka".
I recall it was a chestnut horse with a white blaze......maybe?!
