Well, I wasn't thinking ahead when I taught my cue phrase...."Go pee pee!"....I kinda feel like an idiot sometimes, standing there with my adult male Lab, saying "Go pee pee!" in a high pitched voice suitable for talking to a human toddler. If I were a guy, I think I'd look even sillier. Next time, I'll think a little longer before picking my cue.
I brought my dog home at 18 months, and he did not lift his leg for the first several months that I had him. He was neutered prior to 12 months of age. He lifts now (he is now 3yo), but leans forward and pees on the ground just as frequently. My last male started lifting his leg much earlier (about the time his testicles were fully descended), and never squatted or leaned forward after that. I didn't have him neutered until he was 3yo. I really do think it has something to do with the timing of neutering, as far as when they start and how much of a habit it becomes.
I was smart and did what Ed suggested by teaching my female to eliminate by telling her to "hurry up outside". My male was another story entirely. Like you, his cues are "hurry up go poopy" and "hurry up go potty" I realized what an idiot I was after the fact for teaching him that. Here he is, a huge male GSD, and I'm outside talking to him like a child telling him to "hurry up go poopy". Yes, the neighbors think I'm insane
Shadow was sniffing around a tree this morning....maybe, just maybe one of these days he'll get the idea and pee on it! That's even funnier...me outside cheering him on to pee on the tree!
On those cold winter days; it's "hurry up you guys and potty". They comply cause their just as much in a hurry to get back in the house. On those warm summer days' it's hurry up you guys and potty"..they look back at me with eyes that say "ya can't rush a job well done"
As to the male squat vs lifting the leg. I've got a Basenji male that is 2yrs old. He still squats even though he has two other older male role models. I don't care..as long as he squats outside.
Training a pup to relieve themselves on command is basic good sense. What can be easier then when House Training. A pup will pick up this command very fast. Look at the number of repetitions of this exercise the pup gets daily.
Hell, use what ever you want for command, the pup won't know any better.
