I spoke with a friend who had attended the working championship for Boxers in Germany some years back. He said the dogs were suprisingly nice. He had gone to try to purchase a titled dog and what he found was a pretty tight community of Boxer enthusiasts and dogs for sale weren't easy to find.
As was mentioned in this thread, the German Government did support the Boxer population for work during two world wars with rations and a breeding program. They do not have inferior noses because of the shape as was also mentioned. In Europe the boxer is very popular in dog sports, most notably schutzhund. In fact you can not register a litter with the Boxer Klub if the parents have not passed a breed suitability test, most go on to earn VPG1s, 2s, and 3s. Every year the hold the ATIBOX show somewhere in Europe where dogs compete by country, like the olympics, in show and schutzhund, many in both. The reason they are not seen in competition in the US is the US dogs, for the most part, are not up to the task. It's equivilent to asking the shepherd being shown at Westminster to do a test of courage. The parents of my current dogs are both titled. The mother is working towards her 3 now and the father has his 3 and qualified for and competed at the German all breed championship. Both have earned FHs.
Hi Kevin (New Mexico!) and Luke (Coconut Grove - is that Florida near Miami??).
I'm really happy to see more people showing up for the boxer discussion. I have no personal vested interested other than falling in love with the breed through training along side of them week after week. I completely respect the position of the WORKING boxer enthusiasts and breeders I've met, and what people are collectively working to accomplish - bringing the workability of the boxer breed back into the USA.
Luke, it sounds like Kenneth would be a great contact for you, just on the surface. You can get to his own website under "Bizzy" on the left menu bar at http://www.JolietSchutzhund.com. I'm sure he'd love to connect with you. They (Kenneth, Demetrius, probably Renee too), and others they are all hooked up with in the working Boxer community are trying to organize a US National SchH Boxer Championship up in IL at Dave's home and home club - either '07 or '08. I don't know the details, and this isn't an announcement. Regardless of that, I know they are all looking to breed with titled dogs and preserve the working abilities. I respect that a lot, and want to do whatever I can to support that effort. Hope you all are in touch!
Thanks Beth, I think we're all members of USABOX, the working Boxer club here in the US. There are quite a few good dogs here now, many SchIIIs, and other disciplines as well.

I'm sure you all are. I hope if a significant event is organized up here - some way, some how - that you can come. Me and Gary will be on the sidelines, and we have the most convenient beer supply!!
I've read the thread and found the information very interesting. Since I've become more involved in this fourm, I am becoming more interested in schutzhund and was wondering if anyone knew of a club in Co? I went to a boxer club of co last month but it was all about conformation...

I would also suggest joining USA-Box http://usabox.org/ . I learn alot from other people in my breed who train and compete in things I want to learn about and try. I work with great trainers who don't own Boxers, but there's always a few tips and tricks you pick up from those who do.
