Since i stopped vaccinating my dog and swithced to raw food, i have had no real reason to visit my vet. I should mention that from 6 months to a year, he experienced some neuro type undiagnosable "episodes". They have been gone for over a year now.
Just to clarify Jennifer, specifically, at what age did you switch to raw and no vacx?

Forgive me I am away from home and my doggy paperwork at present. I think i began on raw when the dog was about 9 months, and did not revax after his puppy shots were complete (parvo/distemper, one rabies) If you wnat exact info I will have to get back to you.
The episodes (there were 5 or 6 in total) did not disappear when I switched to raw. They became less and less frequent and then dissapeared at around a year of age. Frustrating I will probably never know what or what combination of things casued it. I am comfortable keeping him on a natural diet, not revaxing, and trying to keep him off drugs and anethestics. MAny tests (bile acid, lyme, addisons to name a few) and bloodwork was done, revealing nothing.

Do you have titers and/or blood work done? Or just the eye-ear-nose-teeth check?
I'm glad you asked this, Jan. I've been wondering if raw fed dogs, even young ones, should have yearly or twice yearly blood tests. Seems the best way to know if I'm screwing anything up with the diet.

I have chosen yearly blood work as long as my dog is healthy and happy. This is why:
When I did our last blood work/wellness, I went to a new vet that does not approve of raw feeding. He told me my dog looked fabulous (teeth, muscle tone, weight, coat, bloodwork....) and then asked me what I fed him and how often I brushed his teeth. I proudly told him he was raw fed and I have never brushed his teeth
The vet gave me a 30 second lecture on how he doesn't reccommend raw feeding and then told me something like "you have obviously researched his diet well and whatever you are doing it looks great on him. Keep it up!" That helped my confidence.
The vet was unconcerned that the BUN levels were slightly higher than his kibble counterparts, noting we would be looking for a change over time. He felt once a year was fine for blood work for my dog, despite the raw diet.
Do what makes you comfortable
Cheers,
Jennifer
