I must say you have now made my day. I was missing someone calling me a s*it. Haven't had that happen since I was 12. Hey, you have been on the computer too long. You probably have a puddle to clean up.

Cute,
Anyway... BYB's breed dogs that are too young, reguardless of lineage.
A responsible breeder will take his/her dog back if there is a problem.
A responsible breeder will wait to breed a dog until it has AT LEAST had its health tested, OFA,CERF etc.
A good breeder will also test the dogs temperment before breeding through some type of breed suitable test. (Gsd's SchH, JRT earth dogs, Retreivers that retreive(go figure that one))
You hear what you want to hear. You see what you want to see. Sad part is, I have been where you are now, and until I started hanging around shelters I didn't understand the plight of all these animals that come from BYB's. One day you will understand how a DOG LOVER, could tell you to take the dog back, until then get a thicker skin.

until then get a thicker skin. HEHE....you wouldn't be telling me that would you???
I see about 150 dogs a week. Most owners are like this. It is unfortunate for the dogs that is. What's the phrase I am looking for?
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Hey, I'm a dog lover and fairly new at the dog owning game (9 years). Many people get gooey eyed over puppies BUT I would never bring one home from a breeder I hadn't fully researched and visited. Remember you'll be spending 10+ years of your life with this dog. When you're originally purchasing you have to look at the dog like a commodity. You get what you pay for. It's an investment. Emotion should be secondary to a clear and level-headed decision on breed, temperament, etc.
Now that you have the dog and you say you want to keep it you have both a moral and ethical responsibility to either:
A) return the dog to the breeder and hope for some $$$ back (you must be unemotional about it) OR
B) pay the $$$ to have the dog fully tested and if possible fixed. You want the dog to have some physical quality of life. Remember it's the RESPONSIBLE thing to do, maybe not the most pleasant.
And everyone stop the name calling and abuse. You asked for advice. You got it. You don't like or agree with it. Don't post in the topic anymore. We're all ADULTS, aren't we?

Ok, I don't think the name calling is necessary.
Although Todd could probably be a little nicer about it, all he's saying is that a good, reputable, conscientous breeder never breeds a dog that's that young, or one that hasn't had the proper health screenings done (hips, elbows, etc.)
Tammy, if you're new to this, you may not have realized that. We all makes mistakes, especially in the beginning when we don't know what we're getting into...God knows I did, and I learned the hard way too. But, unless you knew all this stuff before and purchased the dog anyway, it isn't your fault, it's the breeders fault. Just learn from this mistake and try to make better choices the next time around. Don't ever support someone who breeds their dogs that young, and make sure their dogs have been evaluated for health problems prior to buying a puppy from them. If the breeder doesn't meet these qualifications, they are backyard breeders and should be avoided at all costs.
See Todd, was that so hard? Don't slam her if she didn't know, just explain why these things are problems. Everyone has to start somewhere, and how are they going to learn if no one takes the time to explain?

Amen, Caniche. Responsibility has to play a part in Tammy's decision as to what to do with the puppy if it can't be cured of the problem. She will find out soon enough, and have to make a decision, possibly a difficult one. She's obviously attached to the dog, which is understandable, but the dog's quality of life has to be a priority....and the breeder needs to take some responsibiity.
