It's rigid sturdy plastic, but it comes with a washable pad that fits onto the corners kind of like a fitted sheet.

Gotta throw in a comment about T-touch. It's outstanding, and simple. My Chi had extensive spinal surgery several years ago and loves his T-touch massages, and my horse is just a sucker for a massage and has no physical problems, but I do it on him anyway, and he literally melts and leans into it with his eyes closed. They absolutely love it and beyond massage benefits, it's great for bonding!

.. he is 28 inches "long" partially curled. Will the medium be enough for him?
My large is only 4" longer than the medium and it works for either a curled-up GSD or two small dogs at once.
I guess I would get whichever one I could fit into his space for when you are gone and still give him a soft un-heated bed or pad besides.

Also, yes to the T-Touch massage. Even if you learn just one or two of the moves (which is all I have done), I think that it's a wonderful thing. My granddog, a retired earth dog with all the characteristics you expect in a Border Terrier (and then some) will also close his eyes and melt into it. There is a spot on his spine where he kind of grunts and slumps down in total relaxation pose ..... and this is not a "relaxation" kind of dog.
And T-Touch is not in any way an invasive or probing technique.

Just an update on ordering...
I ordered the medium pad and TTouch. Actually, I sent the check in today's mail. It will take awhile to get here since I couldn't afford more than regular shipment costs, but I can't wait to get this!
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

The pad was delivered today! I am at work, but can't wait to get it out and plug it in for him! Right now, he is in my old bedroom with a box spring over the heating duct, my old coat he laid on when he was a puppy is on the box spring cover, and a water bowl near by.
I am buying his Ester-C today and glucosamine if I can find it without chondroitin. (He vomits with the combination supplement).
Connie, thanks for bringing up the pad. I think he will definitely get use out of it.
Jenni and Connie...thanks so much for the personal reviews of the TTouch.
I am going to read the book first and then try the massage over Christmas.
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

Jo
I don't know if you have a crate yet, but have you considered an ex-pen instead? Seeing as he's already housebroken, non destructive, and relatively calm (and you're not using a crate to prevent, say, dog fights) I think an ex-pen is ideal for your situation.
There is no top, so he can stand up comfortably, and the floor space is 4 feet x 4 feet (16 square feet). There is enough room that you could have the heating pad on one side and a non-heated blanket on th other, so he could move to wherever he feels comfortable. And it is easy to clip a water bucket on the bars.
You could also clip the ex-pen to his open crate, so that he only has access to the crate and the pen.
Here is an example of one: http://harebraindd.homestead.com/expenFritz.jpg

Huh....never occurred to me.
I don't have a crate yet, but I know he would love to have a "den". He used to sleep under my bed (it was waaayyy off the floor), but I had to get rid of it.
So, a crate and an ex-pen...that would work great in the house and outside...I think. He has never jumped a gate or fence.
The crate would be left open. Outside, he would be in shade and not tethered to anything that could wrap around a tree or pole.
I am liking this idea.
I will price the xpen at Rural King and check out their crates.
I may go with Leerburg for a crate.
I will need to think that one out. It will have to work both inside and outside.
THANKS!!! Hambone says Merry Christmas to all!
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |
