Yep. Dalmations were always on the "nervy" side, but after 101 Dalmations, the breed was practically destroyed.
It's hard enough as-is to find a good GSD breeder. This certainly didn't help matters much.

I have friends who (responsibly) breed various breeds and the one thing they all agree on ...
"I hope my breed don't win Crufts."
Basically you can say that in the 1-2/3 year mark after a breed wins Crufts or appears in a movie - they appear in shelters

Since President-elect Obama is planning on getting a dog, let's hope that the people who irresponsibly buy puppies will be looking
at that breed and not GSDs. Considering how much my dog sheds, they can't have a GSD due to allergies in the family.

Let's hope that Obama end up choosing a shelter pooch and inspires thousands to adopt!

There has been a considerable push by animal advocates for Obama and his family to ADOPT a dog, from a shelter or rescue, for precisely this reason - to encourage people who want a dog to both A. give an already homeless dog a home, and B. choose that animal based on factors other than 'someone important has one just like him'. I know the first family needs a hypoallergenic dog, but breed rescues are full of potential, and in some cities, I'm sure you could find a purebred poodle/ labradoodle/etc. in a shelter without too much problem...
Given Biden's unfortunate mistake regarding this matter, I sure hope Obama makes a better decision.
*I was also a little disturbed by how dirty that little GSD puppy appeared in the AP pics - who would want their dog getting that much press looking like it was raised in filth??

The whole "hypoallergenic" dog thing makes me giggle uncontrollably.
My mother, my brother and I are all allergic to virtually every furry animal on the planet. Dogs, cats, horses, hamsters, etc.
I've also had furry, non-hypoallergenic pets in my home since I was born. My GSD is far from hypoallergenic. I choose deal with it.
I think the hypoallergenic dog craze just an excuse to market puppy-mill dogs (Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Yorkiepoos, Bichonpoos, every kind of doodle or poo on the face of the planet). Designer mutts.
I would prefer to see President Elect Obama choose a purebred Wheaton from a breed rescue. Wheatons, Poodles, many terrier breeds, and Schnauzers are all "hypoallergenic" breeds.

Edit reason: I'm allergic to both of my mom's dogs- Standard Poodle and Bichon-Poo

The hypoallergenic dog is a myth. It is nothing more then a marketing ploy by unscrupulous breeders to make money from uninformed public. All dogs despite breeding or mixing of mutts have allergens. This goes along with the doodles and poos being non-shedding dogs, another false claim. Only a very few dogs out of these mixes are acutally have a "non-shedding" coat like a poodle. Everyone that I have met that has purchased one of these mutts, in most part for the shedding claim soon found out they were dupped.

I agree!
Any dog that has saliva is going to create an allergic reaction. The shedding fur is only an easier way to get the allergens to your system.
We have two boys that are allergic to furry creatures and Rob is crazy allergic. We have the best results keeping the animals out of the rooms, and off of the furniture, and having mostly hard floors in the house. Regularly wiping down all of the creatures with a damp cloth (daily) and brushing outside helps tremendously as well (of course done by the only non-allergic person in the house… me… ).
Like Alyssa said, you either deal with it or don’t. What you don’t do is fall for the unscrupulous breeders that prey on your ignorance.

Amen! If you want a dog, deal with everything that comes with it.
