I wish there was a way to show my gratitude to that silly dog
I am sure with all the time spent in training and doing all that you do with her, let's her know and is gratitude in spades.
Your sig pic just shows how attentive she is with you.
It looks like you two have a very special bond.
I really think it depends on the dog and it's relationship with it's owner. Common sense rules.
Yes, definately. I learned that my Collie is happiest and easiest to deal with when there is some structure but not too much.
I used to chase him off the couch and not allow any of the things that might induce dominance but he became stubborn and unpleasent so I started to back off.
He is still not allowed on the bed, but sometimes he rests on the couch, and if someone is sitting on the floor he likes to curl up with his paws on your legs like a big cat does, and sometimes he goes to the high landing and watches over everyone down in the great room.
None of these things seem to puff him up with extra dominance and rank though, so I figure that he is just not inclined that way.

My opinion only. And I read this on the website too. I have 2 dogs that were on the furniture and in bed all the time. This creates territorial issues. And fights did happen when I let them at will do this...It was the fights that happened suddenly. Lot's of "ranking" happened also. I have not had a fight this year after learning everything from this site.
If you have just one dog...then it's whatever you feel I guess.
I didn't make it through reading all the posts, I apologize if this has already been stated.
If all mine were on my bed I wouldn't fit. They all sleep in their crates anyways.
But they do argue about the couch. If I'm at work my husband lets Lady (my husky mix) sit on the couch next to his chair. I will sometimes invite one of the three on the couch with me but not often. They have taken to arguing who gets to occupy the floor between the couch and chair. It's silly though because usually the girls start pushing each other out of the spot and then go wrestle over it leaving my male lab to steal the spot and get all the petting.
I've had people report that they had one dog on the couch with them and when the other came up he got snapped at by the startled one on the couch.
I think many people rather take the better safe than sorry approach with the furniture.
I let my older one sleep with me at one point. He is hairless and the nights were cold. Our plumbing was done wrong and the furnace was malfunctioning so we were not getting enough heat in the house. He is a 13 lbs terrier. Small thing. I ended up on the very edge of the bed every night. He hogged the entire bed and tried to kick me out. As a result of sleeping in a twisted position I ended up with a shoulder inflammation, I couldn't move for months and needed physical therapy. It took about two years for it to get better. Shots, therapy, painkillers. Crate is the name of the game in our house.
