It means dividing it up into 3 or 4 meals. With a pup with the runs, I would feed no more than 1/8 - 1/4 cup of food at a meal. Once you see stool forming solid logs you would add more food at each meal over time. It can often take a week or 2 (after a long bout with diareah) to get totally back on track with normal food & quantities. If you rush the process...the pup will relapse.
puppy s 19weeks old. isnt 1/8th or 1/4th too little? i m aiming for 1/3, 1/2 ... would that be fine? m feeding him 4x

I'd do exactly as the ladies are sayin'.
Too much food can contribute to diarrhea.
Right now the cause of the diarrhea, and the diarrhea itself needs to be dealt with. Once that is fixed, then you can worry about more food, then after that you can worry about switching food.
Plenty of the BEST food in the world is useless if it is just blowin' through a growing puppy. Get the diarrhea under control first. Everything else is a secondary issue right now.

Going back, I saw "big portions."
Just wanted to highlight this part of Betty's post:
"I'd find some bland type diet, bagged or cooked hamburger or chicken/ rice, whatever, and stick with it a week, small (q)uantities frequently."
(Big portions are a stressor on the gut.)
I wanted to highlight it, too.

Also, you can add an additional small meal rather than increase the portion at one meal.

do you think 5 meals are too much?
even if they re as small as 1/8th and 1/4th of a cup? remember, we re not looking at runny diarrhea anymore, but at loose stools (consistency of a mcdonald's sundae. i donno why i keep on giving that example but that s what it is)

Two small items:
You can join a free Photobucket-type site and link us to photos.
"( i got him some vitatabs to keep him healthy ) " Vitatabs, no matter what kind they are (except actual balancing supplements for a boneless diet), are not supplying the calcium the dog needs. Calcium isn't a vitamin, and even if it's a vit/min supplement, it's almost certainly just a "to be on the safe side when feeding a balanced diet" multi.
I just don't want you to think that any multi supplement is balancing this soothing but unbalanced diet. The goal is to get his poops normal with these small soothing meals and the vet meds, and then to slowly and gradually ( small meals!) switch to a good (not R.C., IMO) balanced food. As much of a proponent of raw diets as I am, I would not make the switch to raw until the dog was healthy. The reason is that you want a "perfect poop" starting point so you can see clearly and quickly if any ingredient added to the daily menu is causing a problem. This is even more important with an inflamed-gut history.
Back to the multi -- if more than a few additional days on this rice-based diet are needed, we should talk about calcium supplementation.
Ideally, though, poops will start to firm up and the switch to real food can begin.
JMO.

I don't know what McDonald's sundaes are, but guessing soft-serve ice cream? So the poops are not green, and are kind of formed, at least enough not to puddle?
Nothing has gone backwards in a day or more? Then yes, I'd probably try an additional small very-soft-rice meal.

Food does not treat Giardia, and it sure sounds like Giardia to me from everything you've posted.
The food has only a support role in this.
"upside is karly s definitely going on command " Excellent!
