Began as a sec'y in a no-kill shelter, moved into being a vet surgery assistant w/o school (it could be done in"68).
Moved to Colorado, for pre-vet/vet school. Hooked a great man who became an MD (will be 36 yrs married in June). Did dairy/equine medicine in Minnesota for 20 yrs, few yrs of pets at the end. Adopted 2 boys. When that started to get tough (adolescence) quit work and bought a farm, raising registered Angus, a few colts for the track, turkeys. With time, boys left. Now just a housewife with a few cows and a farm; body kinda shot . But, our farm is beautiful, husband still loves me, life is good.
Would you adopt me??? Of course I come with 2 dogs and a horse. I'd leave the kitties to keep my hubby company

MP in the US Army currently deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan. It's not perfect but it comes with a lot of benefits and I get to see some places you would almost never see otherwise. Before this I worked in kennels which was nice because you got to work with the animals but it's a dead end job with very low pay.

In high school I started working at a doctor's office doing medical records (filing, putting charts together, easy stuff). By the end of two or three years I made it up to billing and did charge entry/payment posting. I billed medical insurances and could pretty much do coding without being certified.
I never liked the job. In fact the actual job itself I dreaded going to. But I had the best coworkers I could ever possibly ask for and all future jobs will have to be compared to them. I would have never made it if it weren't for that crazy bunch.
I did that for over 5 years getting myself through college. I was a business administration and operations management double major. When I had three classes left to take I realized it wasn't for me. When people asked me what I wanted to do after college I said, "I don't." And I didn't. I didn't want to do anything. I hated school and everything that had to do with it. I went from being a 4.0 AP high school student to a 2.9 barely making it college student.
So I decided I wanted to be a vet tech. So I took a class at a private school and did an externship and got a job. It's pretty much amazing. I did graduate with a Bachelor's in my double major. I got my Associate's in Liberal Arts on the way. It feels really good to have finished that and I'm really proud of myself for pushing through it, even if I didn't graduate with a GPA anywhere near where I wanted it. But the last few semesters I just wanted to be done.
Now I'm debating whether or not I want to continue at this little private school so I can get my RVT certification. I do want to be certified, but I am so done with school. I need a break. I went to school spring, summer, fall, and winter. At one point I took 22 units, Monday through Saturday, while also working 35 hours a week.
I don't want to do that again. I don't want to be stuck in class until past 10. And most importantly, I want time for my dogs. Some of the recent classes are one of the days we train at the Schutzhund club, and I'm not sure I want to give that up. So we'll see. I know I'll finish school, it's just a matter of when.
In the mean time, being a vet assistant is awesome. I do eventually want to be a surgical tech or work in emergency critical care/trauma.
I love blood and guts. It's so much more interesting than diarrhea and vaccines.

After years of working for other people in pet stores I now own my own boarding kennel. 24 dog runs, 9 cat cat room, bird room and grooming. Work by myself a lot (not counting the beasts) with average less hours and more freedom than anywhere else. Making more money than I ever have, my own boss, my own hours... Life is good.

Interesting thread!!!! I was a vet tech back in the 70's, worked in law publishing for a few years and then went back to school for art. Been a full time artist now for about 27 years.........which is great because I get along with my pack much better than most humans.
I had aspirations to be a forensic sculptor at one time but realized that I would totally lose it the first time I got a child's skull to work on!!!
