If I was feeding raw, I don't think I would add enzymes, but I feed my dogs a home-cooked diet and so I add a digestive enzyme supplement, since it is my understanding that cooking destroys a lot of the natural enzymes in raw meat. I use Berte's 'Zymes, from Lew Olson's web site:

Sharon, the dog absolutely requires calcium supplementation on a boneless diet like this.

I wouldn't use the rice/chicken diet alone for that length of time. I would balance it with the necessary calcium, I'd have excellent efficient protein in it (like white chicken and white fish), I'd give fish oil and E and the best yogurt (unsweetened, unflavored, live cultures) and I'd probably use baby food vegetables for super-digestibility.
Does your family eat eggs (because we can work with eggshells if you have them around anyway)?
"... he has been eating greek fat free yogurt plain. " You know that this is probiotics "on the hoof," right? You want to check out the labels and look for the words "live active cultures," and then compare the numbers. For example, Cascade and Nancy's both have more cultures than most supermarket brands.
yes, I am going to begin to add the supplements a little at a time to his diet. I use egg shells. So, I am going very slowly. I like using egg shells.
Great advise on the yogurt. I am going to go in and write it down right now. yes, I know yogurt is a probiotics. But I was reading that yogurt doesn't have all the cultures that are needed. But I always put yogurt in their food each day.
Thanks for all the help, you guys are great!
Love,sharon
You will want to save and grind the shells (in a coffee grinder is fine), and then use 1/2 teaspoon of the ground shell per pound of boneless food.
I have a question about using eggshells. There is a very thin, transparent membrane on the inside of the shell. Does that have to be removed? Just wondering because I have thought of using eggshells as a calcium supplement, but pulling that membrane off all the pieces proved impossible for me. But if you leave it on, doesn't it get all gummed up as you're grinding or crushing the shells?
