and an interesting bit of information, I know that a man my dad works with has a pt shepherd and he paid $30,000 for it, for you breeders there is some big money to be made.
Then the idiot friend of your dad paid about 25,000 too much.
That is an outrageous price and you will only see a few real jackasses selling dogs for that.
For that kind of money you could buy yourself a world champion working line GSD, as in a winner of the BSP or WUSV, in the prime of his working life still ready to compete.
VanCamp,
I think that a true PPD, what I would call an executive body guard dog, could command a price of $15,000 and it still be a reasonable figure.
Consider the price of a good dog that could handle the training at the level that a true PPD would require. After all, we're not looking for just some spook-bag that barks at the drop of a hat. You'd be looking at a hell of an investment in training, plus even a dedicated training staff would only be able to train a small number of dogs of this caliber a year.
The dog would be well worth the price to the right parties, tho.
I'm actually exploring this option with other trainers at this time. It's a niche market, but the demand is out there.
Then elite dogs only for elite people.
So what then is a reasonable price for a working man, that requires a PPD for business. I am about to purchase a PPD for 5K. Without Pedigree, from Czech Republic through Kennel in U.S. Dog is not Schutzhund. Just being advertised as PPD. What am I getting into. Any recommendations or direction advice.
Thank you in advance. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I would look local where you can see the dog work before getting a dog I have never see. I would also find an agitator and have them bring the dog to me for testing. Many dogs look good on their home field with an agitator they know, but won't work in a strange place with a strange agitator.
If you don't have experience with dogs I would expect that there would be a traning period for you as well as a transitional period to get the dog to know you. Another reason to get the dog locally.

I think the board is proof that you have plenty of highly reputable breeders right here in the good old USA that are producing some high quality working stock from exceptional lines.
Jim,
I think that 5K for an unpapered PPD would be steep, unless the dog is trained to an incredibly high level.
Waaay too often, dogs are sold as PPD's due to some fundamental temperment flaw that scraps them out as a sport dog. Beware of buying someone's wash-out dog and paying 2 1/2 times what it's worth.
You could get an excellent young dog out of great Czech lines from several of the breeders that post here and train him yourself for less than half that price.
I worked for a vet for eight years before becoming an officer, then k9 handler. I did almost everything there, but my main job was head caretaker for all the boarded and hospitalized animals. There were two of us females when the Dr hired another.
This was so weird. NO DOGS liked this new female. Even the cute, cuddly poms and poodles that had never shown aggression would either cower or growl.
Now, I've been bitten quite a bit by dogs and cats through my years of trial and error, but this girl got bit more than 10 times the two months she worked there. But the thing was that all the animals that Jamie and I had been dealing with for years (the regulars) did not respond well to this girl. It was the wierdest thing.
Now dogs might not be pyschic, but I think they have an EXCELLENT judge of character, and there was something that just wasn't right about her. (She was fired after those two months for various reasons, but one reason was for the liability.)
