Would like to point out a very simple thing.
Breeds not used for protection, irish setter, pointer or simmilar, coul be taught to hold (arest) an intruder or offender by the crotch area using aporting reflex. This dogs and some other decorative breeds can and do this way protect their owners and themselves in a critical situation. So anybody with the simple NON-AGRESSIVE dog can use this method. Help of knoledgeable trainer in needed in the process.
I have explained a reflex to use on those dogs. If You like I will post to You personaly a training sinopsis. NOT TO BE USED WITH STRONG JAWS BREEDS and NOT TRAINED INSTRUCTORS. Interpol trainers are heavy smokers and DO train these (non protective breeds) the trick to defend themselves and their masters in extreme cases. Thank You for Your kind attention.
Richards comments on Pds is a valid one,how many people really need a proper protection dog, most need a dog as a deterrent that will offer some protection should the need arise.
I am unsure as to what is considered a protection dog by most on this list,to me a protection dog is one that is capable of stopping an individual by any means possible and I am sure that such a dog in private hands would be a liability unless the handler is also properly trained and confident to handle such a dog.
Is there really a need for this type of protection in the public arena, other than when a person is at direct risk from a known source.
I would never consider supplying one of my dogs to a member of the public as in the wrong hands they are a potential hazard and few would be kept at the correct level of training to ensure safety.
Ther are some excellent trainers of protection dogs but I am sure for everyone of them there are a hundred bad ones who just read the $$$$$$$$
IF THE RIGHT PUPPY is chosen, it has to be properly raised and trained.
80% of normal human population can NOT DO THAT.
We a sorounded with 99% dogs without even basic manners, needless to say not OBEDIENT TRAINED.
Only 5% of people are capable of handling the remaining 1% of dogs.
The question is DO I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES to properly train a dog, and handle it in adult stage?
If NOT an competent instructor will do that but WHO IS THE PACK LEADER than?
If YES is an answer, the person will handle whatever is given a puppy or an adult with success.
The best thing that can happen with adult trained dog is YOU have what it takes and everythin goes fine. You do not know the dog from the puppyhood so beware.
Next best thing is dog is going to like you and protect you on his terms, you are facing a law suit.
The remaining options are so BAD needless to explain.
The PROTECTION DOG is YOUR WARRIOR.
But beware if starting a war it takes casualties on both sides, especialy if criminal gang population is involved.
All the answers are actualy in the articles on this site.
Best wishes and good luck.
Ed and Vince, what Dimitriz said about the non protective breeds is not as funny as you seem to think, several European countries are in fact doing just this type of training to protect search dogs if they are threatened.
I don't want to get into a discussion of ball biting dogs. In my opinion if a dog does not inherit the gene to protect itself the best thing to do is to teach it to bark. This will scare off the majority of people.
Thanks Paul. Vince send me a E-mail direct address. I will send You a sinopsys for training. I must emphasise again it is not REAL protection training, no agression involved etc. Not want to publish the method because if unexperienced owners start to do that there will be a lot of unpleasant injuries with helpers an when mass produced a reproductive ability of Your country male population will be dimnished.
All the others. Fun is O.K. Laughing is good for your health so please go ahead and practice it as often as possible. It seems that I can help, so expect more, but beware of the facts.
