Are we still allowed to post to this?
Just wanted to share what I do:
(I live in Canada, so we do have winter to help us out) I give my dog holistic kibble plus natural foods as a diet and give her garlic for the fleas.
For heartworm, I have to watch the mosquito population, as my vet (studied in holistic, chinese medicines, nutrition etc besides western medicine) found that the mosquito must have a temperature of 18C (68F?) day and night for 29 days before they can transmit the heartworm. So, though I noticed the mosquitos 9 May, we have had temperatures down into the 30Fs (0C) so I can work with that ....
Also, the heartworm meds are good for 45 days. I give the Heartgard (only heartworm) for my dog but on this regime.
Hope that helps people -- just experiences in my own journeys and discoveries! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Kiersten,
I thought the Hartgard was suppose to be given every 30 days......but are you saying that it lasts up to 45 days? Because that would be better for the dog to only have to give 2 tablets every 3 months.

Are people using Frontline or Frontline Plus? I live in Illinois, so anyone else from the general area (IL,MO,IN, WI, MI)- your input would be appreciated!

I've been using Frontline Plus on my 5 month old GSD for a couple of months now. I've had no bad reactions whatever. He's spent a lot of time with me in the woods for his SAR training and I've yet to find any critters on him. I live in St. Louis County.

I give heartgard every 5 weeks. That still gives me a few days to forget without putting my animals at risk of getting heartworms. I just can't remember reliably enough to stretch it out to the full 45 day interval.

I realize this is an old post, but it might be helpful for some new members.
NANCY: I live in Asheville! What a small world!
We use Ivomec for Gypsy for heartworm preventative.
I've never really had a problem with fleas on her, and she lived outside exclusively until March of this year. But, because my husband and I take her many places with us, including hiking and backpacking, and because he had a major flea problem in his home last year (don't know why, because his cats stay indoors, but they just decided to move in and take over), I decided to keep flea/tick preventative on Gypsy. I had used Bio-Spot, then Advantage, then Revolution on her before, but when Revolution didn't help at all; I was getting ticks off her constantly after we'd been outside; I decided to try the Frontline. So far, so good, but it is rather pricey. Anyone have any experience with Advantix??
Or if anyone knows of any natural ways to do it, I'm all ears!

Natural for fleas and ticks, but not heartworm. What I was told was to feed garlic to the natural diet to change the chemistry of the dog's body so the fleas and ticks don't want to bite. Use a natural bug spray and put a lot around the ears and butt to further repel ticks.
If you find a tick on your dog, use olive oil and tweezers to get it off.

What does the olive oil do for removing the tick?
How much garlic are you supposed to give? I would be careful with it since it is in the onion family and onions are toxic to dogs. I wouldn't want to give too much.
What do you know about Burt's Bees bug spray? It says it's safe for pets, but I've never used it.
