yes i see how you could just easily move your shoes out of his reach or hid the garbage can, but still that does not teach him right from wrong..
It does teach them. You keep taking it away and replacing it with something else, they eventually make the connection.
It's exactly the same as what you are doing. They do A, which you don't like, you smack them, they realize that if they do A, they get smacked.
With my way, they do A, you redirect them to B, and they realize that you won't let them do A, only B. And to boot, when they do B, you praise them.
In the puppy's mind, they are learning the same lesson, but the method you use shapes the way they look at you as a leader.
Not only do you teach the dog what you DON'T want them to do, but you take it a step further and teach them what you WOULD like them to do.

You might want an assortment of tiny training treats (or real bits of meat).... you want the reward to be thrilling.
I like to use small soft ones:

I cannot believe you 'smack' AKA - ABUSE your dogs.
This is not the right way to handle any situation.
I hope you dont have children.

Ive read thru all of the replies, and Im turning the page.
The initial post had me boiling.
Connie has taught me many things on the website, and
if youre going to get good treats, she has mentioned
cooked chicken before, and my pups love it.
Keep us updated.
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

Debbie
Chill out.
Michael came on here asking for help, he has gotten very good advice, and he has said twice that he isn't going to smack his dog again, it is apparent to me that he is very fond of his dog and doesn't want to hurt the relationship.
i have been using missderection for the past week, and yes it does work, and as i stated before i have only hit him twice, and honestly i will not be doing it again.
and beating is a strong word i have never beat any of my dogs, a smack on the rear does not mean a beating. when i say smack hard, i meant hard enough to get his attention as im saying no, but again since my readings today i will never again smack another one of my dogs, i have to also break my habbits.

thank you, so my training is going well, hes all good on sit, paw, and he walks great on a lead. i can also bring him out in the front yard and he wont wander far from me and when he does i say no, he sits and looks at me like "what" lol.
now his only problem is mouthing, now i dont mind him doing while we are wrestling or rough housing one another but i only want him to be like that with me or my friends and only when we are playing with him, as of late he has been doing it to my roomate and a few other, just running up to them and play biting and mouthing my friends.. and they get annoyed.
now my female pit would do that also but only when we were rough housing with her, and only then would she do it and when we said stop or shhhh she would calm down and start kissing us lol.
so how do i get my stubborn boy to stop mouthing when we arent playing with him?
thank you
