Howard,
For hunting of the more conventual sort than wandering through Hussey's or Elmers Barn (just a couple three miles apart), try upland game birds. Pheasants will seem like slow moving targets at a trap range when you try to lead a ruffled grouse.
I grew up in the high plains hunting with my parents; pheasant, quail, and chucka were the birds of choice, with an occassional dove thrown in. Take my word for it, you'll never find a better challenge then the ruffled grouse. Bring a good dog!
Bird season alone is worth a trip to Maine.

I've hunted Ruffed Grouse in W.Va. Trying to hit them things in all that timber is near impossible. Love dove hunting. Took my son to a private field when he was young and used him as my bird dog. When the shooting was hot and heavy I had a tough time keeping track of the downed birds amongst all the cow patties, young eyes were the ticket. :-)
Went pheasant and quail hunting in Illinois. No pheasant but I got a triple on quail with a mossberg 500 pump. Those country boys thought I was god after that. Haven't done it since and probably never will again. We hunted over an Irish Setter named Stormy, good dog.

I thought your praire chickens were the easiest bird I've ever hunted. they just seem to pop up in front of you and it takes them 2 minutes to start flying forward.
Honstly, the first time I hunted in SD was at on the farm of a friend near the reservation. When we got to the end of a very long field, the sky literally filled with pheasant. I brought my shotgun up to my shoulder and never got off a shot. I was absolutely stunned by the number of birds. the friend I was hunting with simply stated; David, the objective is, after walking all that distance, shoot them when they fly.

Yeah, that is what I hear, not to mention you have to chase the little buggers uphill, downhill, sideways and more to get them......I'll try it, but have a feeling that pheasants will be the way to go. hee hee

LOL, I probably would have said that too, but it may have been more colorful and the dog probably would have bitten you in the butt......
He actually gets pissy when you work him hard and then never get a bird for him to retrieve.
