I hate flexi's!
But as a pet shop owner, I can tell you that a large percentage of dog/puppy owners (at least in my area) do not. Most of my nylon or leather leads come in 4 & 6 foot lengths, and can't tell you how many times I'm asked why they don't make THOSE longer!
You tell them that it's a "status thing" the upper class people don't like the flexi's or longer leashes because it looks like they have not spent thousands of dollars training "Precious."

Thanks for the great suggestions, all! I wish I had time to have checked in at work today to thank you each personally as the comments came in. I will print this whole thread out and work on a "products we don't recommend" page for our fledgling website. I need to link Leerburg there too, if I haven't already.
I see so much that just breaks my heart at petstores, like the little aquatic frogs kept in barely a pint of water with instructions that you never have to change the water, and other stuff that is at best worthless and at worst very harmful.
I know this is off-topic, but this one really hits a nerve with me. There are kiosks at the mall that sell these "habitats" and I deal with a lot of customers who come in to "replace" their frogs or goldfish. I bet I have been accused of trying to oversell people at least twenty times when I suggest a heated, filtered aquarium for aquatic frogs. And many times, they "proved" their point with "My frogs (or goldfish) did fine for weeks, they don't need a whole fish tank!" An animal that has years for a lifespan was clearly well-kept if it thrived for a few weeks, I suppose.
My older sister is 44 and still has the goldfish she had when she was a little girl; his name is "Cassidy," after a teen heart throb of her childhood, and I wouldn't be surprised if it outlives Shaun!

Re: little dogs
The day before yesterday my dog and I were approached by four off-leash little dogs that came at us from out of nowhere in a public park. I can keep one or two dogs away from my dog, not four. Behind this pack came two women pushing strollers who shouted the inevitable "They're friendly!" as they kept walking past, engaged in conversation. I shouted back "He's not!" (he is, but they didn't need to know that) and they stopped, tried unsuccessfully to call their dogs a few times, THEN KEPT WALKING like it was my problem.
I walked to my car and put my dog in with the small dogs jumping on him and barking all the way. This is my formerly reactive dog who really didn't need this onslaught, but tolerated it admirably. I did everything I could to keep them away, but there were four of them, and the two women were completely oblivious. After my dog was safely in the car I told the women that there was a leash ordinance at the park and that what they just did put my dog and theirs at risk. They looked at me like I had three heads and kept going.
I called the police, and they were given a talking to and fined. They said that because their dogs were so small, they didn't think it would hurt anybody to let them run around a little. They didn't put them on leashes because they didn't bring any leashes with them. STUPID!!!!
This kind of thing just burns me up!
They are darn lucky you are a good trainer and a responsible owner. I wonder if these people with the PITA little dogs realize that their little dog could be killed by the wrong big dog before they ever knew what was happening!
Its just such a crappy position to be put in.
If I had a small dog not only would it be trained, but it would probably never be off leash in a public place for that very reason.; With the number of aggressive dogs that have rushed us, both big and small, there is no way I would take the chance!
People think i'm paranoid because my dog is rarely off leash. The reason I am this way about it is not only out of a sense of responsibility, but because I had a dog die as a direct result of an attack.

It was a terrible position to be in. I'm VERY fortunate that Murphy is such a sweetheart. I've had a few dogs that weren't necessarily dog aggressive that would still react aggressively in a situation like this.
If I had dogs that were ten or so pounds apiece, I can't imagine being cool with them running up to a good-sized Doberman that I believe to be aggressive, and doing absolutely nothing about it. It just defies all reason. I've never called the police on anyone about loose dogs in the park before, but I've never encountered such a degree of idiocy before, either.
It wouldn't surprise me if one of these little dogs needed to get badly injured or killed before this situation is taken seriously.
It's been a couple of days and I'm still pretty angry.

I don't understand letting even the most reliable, best-trained dog off leash in public, but not even BRINGING a leash is unfathomable. I'll let my girls off lead when hiking from time to time, but only where we almost never encounter others, and they have a (so far) 100% record for recall when we have. And I'm still paranoid and call them close if they wander more than a few yards in those remote places... because of "so far," and "what if." And I have bully breeds, I can't imagine my worries if I had a ten pounder. The mindset of the leashless minis seems to be less about what might happen to them, but what damage they are capable of. You would think both possibilities would worry folks whenever away from their property.

Even at just over a year old my dog is more obedient and reliable than 95% of the other dogs we encounter, and I still won't take the chance.
Tonight I walked her on a 30 foot line at the park, It was immediately after a thunder storm and nobody was there. I wanted to give her a little more freedom to trot and goof off. At one point when she was rolling around in the grass the line must have slipped off. She's so good now that I didn't even notice!
I clipped it back on immediately.
When we were leaving I saw the same guy who's kind of nasty lab rushed us last week. The dog charged and immediately started ranking on my dog, all bristly and snappy, totally ignoring his owner. The guy was all stressed and apologetic about it, but his dog was off leash again!
I don't think I will ever understand it.
ETA: My dog who died was 85 pounds. He was sweet and very obedient, totally submissive with other male dogs to the point that he got peed on all the time. My father had him off leash when this Doberman just charged and attacked him viscously. My dog freaked out, went into "flight" and ran 2 or 3 miles through the woods to the freeway.

My dog is super off-lead too, but I still worry. And there really is a leash ordinance at the park, so I feel like I should comply even if I'm one of the few. I had a bright orange, 9/16" wide, 50' long line made just to have something on my dog that's highly visible but long enough for the end to always be in easy reach.
Very strong and easy on the hands (it's made of something called Softweb); FAR superior to a Flexi IMHO.

How would you use a Flexi in training?
