Here is where my father says "Do I have to stop this car?" (or "Do I have to come up there?").
(JK, you guys. Lively discussion with this level of courtesy is always good. And not once has anyone said "His foot is touching me!!" )

Hi it's been a while since I have been on here and had a pup. I am wondering what are some effective ways to teach your dog/pup manners at the door---ie. when arriving home, having visitors etc.? I did not get this down with my first pup and would like to get it under control this time around! Given the dog has the appropriate amount of excercise, proper food. I am referring to high drive Boxers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
OH, so that was the OP
Sorry, John !!!

Maybe .... but the whole flat-face thing makes me simmer, with episodes of boiling.
The whole brachycephalic respiratory problem list, from soft palate problems to tracheal stenosis to stenotic nares, added to bulging eyeballs, teeth that can be so badly crowded that they are set sideways, much-reduced ability to cool itself .... the list goes on and on.
I have a couple of senior Pugs, but not because I think the breed is a good idea. I don't. Their health challenges are enormous. (I belong to a group of folks who rescue adult and senior Pugs, virtually all of whom have been surrendered for health reasons. They will never be bred, and we don't cause Pugs to be bred.)
And back to our scheduled programming ......

Mark, I try to teach what I want, as opposed to correcting what I don't want. So doorbell behavior (as well as the behavior for my own arrival) is taught, using marker training, very specifically.
Some folks teach "place" for as what happens when the doorbell rings, for example.
If you tell us what you want to happen when the doorbell rings, we can get you started to teaching that command (or those commands).
Same with what you want to happen before you put on the leash to get the pup outside when you arrive at get home.

Going back, I see that Mara and Cathy and Betty and Bob et al have given very good responses already!
Mark, the breed is not really what I focus on when I'm thinking about manners. If you have a very energetic Tigger-type individual, you can make sure a good walk or outdoor game precedes expected company.
And as Betty points out, the dog can always be in another room if need be.
I just want to add that I don't answer the door until what is supposed to happen has happened. If the dog needs to be in another room, I say "Just a minute, please!" No matter what the situation needs to be, that takes precedence over answering the door speedily. JMO!
You do not have to have over-excited visitor behavior.
And I too include the help of friends, family, neighbors, when proofing the training. I imagine everyone on the thread does ; this would be the proofing for this kind of training.
