Robbin...you kill me. I don't even need my morning coffee when you're up and posting. I hope you never change!
Lol! Thanks Sarah! Too much time on my hands in the morning hours, eh? lol
Well, I'll get off the board once I find that video of the Tazmanian Devil from the Warner Brothers cartoons. Remember it? It would come in spinning all crazy and freak out spitting and slobbering?
Sarah, Robbin is definitely a crack-up. And a sweet good-hearted lady as well.
Robbin, all I need is two black spunky pushy bossy dogs getting into everything just cause it's there. On the other hand, I could rename them King Lear and Queen Jazzman. hmmmmmm...
I've been at an agility seminar for a couple of days, so I am just getting caught up on reading the board.
I can't believe there are SEVEN pages on this....
Food stealing off the counter is just like any other issue, if you have your dog WITH you or confined when you can't pay attention this won't happen.
I get emails every day about dogs that get in the trash or get on the furniture when the owners aren't home, and this is not a problem of dogs being bad, it's merely dogs being dogs and if they aren't supervised then you get what you get....
Dogs do what is reinforcing to them, and if getting on the counter and grabbing food is allowed then that's what they are going to do.
Note to self: Create post informing ppl of my warped sense of humor.
You understand? Dont you Jenni? LOL
What are you implying?

Jenni,
I have to agree with you, that dogs do know when they have done something wrong. In my opinion, the saying "It's easier to get forgiveness than permission" was invented by a dog.
Hmm, I always thought it was invented by a MAN!

It amazes me when I think about it, that my dog has learned things that we didn't ever set out to teach him. Like going into his crate at bedtime, even if we don't tell him to.
I think you are right, we underestimate them. Sometimes, I think they count on it
I haven't counted, but there seem to be about a hundred knowledgeable dog trainers on this board named Jennifer.
I think this is key to having the best bond you can with your dog. Assume they are capable. Treat them as if they are. You may be surprised. If you find out they're not, what have you lost by trying? If they are, aren't you glad you gave them that extra credit? It's a win-win. They can/will only develop to the level of potential perceived by their handler. I don't even talk to my dogs like most people. I speak in normal tones, no baby-talk, and I don't treat them like they're idiots, nor do I expect them to respect a handler who says nothing to them but the occasional one-word command. As a result, I have a few dogs that people are shocked by what they understand/obey. They also pay attention to me on a level that I don't see w/most pets and their owners. This is turning into a whole different topic, but this thread has kind of wandered from the beginning...oops.

And because I am getting tired of the PMs about this thread, let's call it a wrap.
