- smaller size, still mushy, light & dark brown.
couple of drops of watery stool in the end.
could it be possible that some dogs dont digest rice? i understand that grain can be a problem but is rice a grain?
Rice is a grain. It's a non-gluten grain, making it far less likely to cause trouble, but it's still a grain that is being used in this case to help firm up the stool. The dog was getting much more grain in RC food, though.
I would want to see formed poops before another food change, unless this goes on for days more (because of the calcium issue). JMO, though.

.... side note: karly is finally fetching (actually getting the toy back to my lap!) m so proud! m so happy that i m actually doing the training this time (had a collie when i was a kid that was sent away for trainig). i feel a bond that s happening bigtime! ... today a couple of people called him to pet him (wasnt gonna let that happen anyway), he didnt even react and looked at me instead! i LOVE those tiny moments
WONDERFUL!
This would go in another thread (not "mushy diarrhea") so it could be expanded on w/o getting way off-topic.

Hi, I'm coming into this late, so I hope I am not repeating someone else's advice. If the dog has consistantly mushy stools, and skinny as a washboard, I would put him/her on pancreatic enzymes and see how the dog does.
The bloodwork may be borderline, but the dog's symptoms and appearance say he needs more.
It won't hurt him. If the vet does not want to prescribe the enzymes get another opinion, or order prozyme from Valley Vet.
I dealt with this in my last dog and if you would like the details, let me know.

That would be something to look at very soon, IMO.
Now that there is an actual test (Serum Trypsin-like Immunoreactivity), EPI isn't the clinical diagnosis that it used to be.

I had not heard of treating for EPI without a diagnosis. Is this common?

Hey Cat,
2 questions:
- Karly s very energetic. wouldnt that rule out EPI considering that he s actually getting that energy from food?
- his stools are better: brownish, still mushy but not even close to the symptoms picture in the link – which is watery and salivy (if that s a word). could i rule EPI out?
i wouldnt mind posting a pic up if you guys feel the need to see it...

Michel, could you please post detailed info about your pup's vaccinations? I am sure the meds given combined with your location might prove useful.

Does anybody else have a problem with too many vaccines given at the same time or am I seeing ghosts?
Thank you, Michel.

how could i identify the problem as vaccinosis? is there a test that should be done?
i just talked to the breeder and he feels i should let him relax after the dolthene and wait a bit till he gets better before i bombard him with meds again.
he s definitely right i mean the pup's only 5months, giving him antibiotics again will really put him down.
i should trust the dolthene helped out and give him time to recuperate. i ll keep the meds for later.

I would not boost the Rabies until one year after the initial rabies. The pup has had enough "shots".
Coccidia, giardia, hookworm all cause damage to the bowel which can take 2 weeks to resolve. These agents destroy the microscopic tips of the intestine which is where the absorption of nutrients and fluid occur, hence a watery stool.
Coronavirus can do the same thing.
Adding pancreatic enzymes to his diet can help if he has pancreatic insufficiency, a good idea that can't hurt him.
BUT- Basically it seems that no one ever gave you a diagnosis of a problem, therefore you are in the dark about what to do. Diarrhea is just a symptom.
If this was my pup, I would give it one more week, and then I would take a stool sample to a different vet and FIND THE PROBLEM and work from there to cure it.
GOOD LUCK!
