Now ma'am, you are using some mighty big words there... I'm gonna hafta print this here out and take it home and have my old dawg read it back to me... the only words I recognized was "whip" and "tequila"...
Found out today that there is a local man who use to train K9 Army Troops for protection and scouting. He agreed to come over afetr he heard through the grapevine that I was in need of an opinion...
He came over and told me to stay in the house for a few minutes. He ran her through all kinds of horrific stuff. I had to not look on the dog roll. (I told him not to do that...who wants to get sued. Nothing happened.) He then took her out into the street for a quick walk. Just by chance it was perfect street filled doogie walk time. Lot's of action. Man, did she not get it.
He then asked me to go through some motions with her...stuff I have never done to the degree he wanted me to...put my hands over her eyes while she was down, in a down stay walk circles around her quickly...stuff like that.
Then we went for a quick walk...of course, the dog did her own thing just has she had done with the handler.
The report: He said that she was worth working with one last time. He felt that I could do it, but, as noted before, give he one chance and one chance only. Any screw ups and put her down.
He had agreed to help me do some major fine tuning to "kick her a## into gear". He said that her drive for prey is intense...she might infact be associating dogs in general as prey and not infact dogs. He said that has come across a few dogs like this before but only a few.
Each night I am to take her to a kennel that is in the country and work around barking dogs. H also advised not using the prong collar which he did try on her. He said use a choker instead. The prong made her fearful which caused more problems. The choker worked best.
He also said to treat her respectfully, but, more like an unwanted guest. NEVER PET HER WHILE OUTSIDE. He said that this put her into 'watch' mode.
Other than all this, he said she was a bull but a very good, sweet dog with people. She never once curled her lip with him...even though I did!
He went out in your yard and alpha rolled your dog?
Did he say why?
He did have one point. When your dog is out messing around and fussing about other dogs you don't want to pet him. That is reinforcing the behavior with praise. "There, there little doggie, its ok" is the same thing as "good dog I like your crappy behavior".
He wanted to push her to the limits with human response...because of my situation he wanted to be very clear that she would not attempt to bite him. Again, I did ask him not to do this. His response to me was that he CLEARLY was looking for her to re-buke his control efforts. I see now what the confusion would be...he basicly charged HER, made a g=aggressive move towards HER. He wanted to see what she would do. Now, again, I am not promoting this so don't string me up.
He was very staight with me when he said that she never lifted a lip. That was why he felt that if I worked with her prey drive FIRST then later he could go back to the aggressiveness.
Anyone have this situation with prey drive before?
