I think its pretty awesome also! I find animal people tend to gravitate toward other animal people. There are many people I refuse to be around based simply on how they have talked about animals or their dogs. Ill end up in a full on argument, I can't handle anyone who is remotely cruel to animals. and my definition of animal cruelty is often times much different than what other's are.
I actually have an issue going to my inlaws because of how they think a dog should live. I can't stand going over there, and my husband knows this. But that could be a whole other thread in itself lol
I'm that way with my in-laws, too. We have totally different views and they have no business owning a Mal, but I've said my piece and now I just won't discuss the dogs with them (mother-in-law mainly).

Mine is more of a problem of neglect. They have only had outdoor dogs. Dogs to them are just dogs. They live outside, its weird to train them or spay/neuter. He doesn't get walked or played with. He has a yard, to them that's great. He gets fed the cheapest dog food at the grocery store etc. Its not that they purposely try to hurt the dog, they put extra blankets out in his dog house in the winter and give him left overs they think any dog would be lucky to get. A lot of it is ignorance.
The big problem is his health. They have a sweet lab pit mix with horrible ear problems. Its getting to the point where he is losing his hearing. I've gotten them to take him to the vet, which did help but only for a short time. He actually got a hematoma last year on his ear from scratching. Which ended up costing a lot more than if they would have taken them in like I politely reminded them about often. They don't have a lot of money and certainly wouldn't spend it on the dog first if they did have extra. But its to the point where I have written her emails about changing his food, on yeast infections of the ear, he's also very smelly. I even made them a homeopathic ear solution at last resort and told them they had to clean his ears with 2x a day everyday until cleared. Last time I talked to them I brought up the fact that they hadn't needed a refill on the solution. Which obviously means they aren't using it correctly.
I just get shrugged off. Its never taken seriously. I can't go over there and look at him. It makes me sick to my stomach. He watches us from the clear sliding door right at the kitchen. It breaks my heart. We have talked about taking him but financially we can't afford another dog now.esp one with more health issues. And he would come with a lot of work. I go when I absolutely have to. I stay as short as time as possible. And I've told my husband, if it was my family I would refuse to ever go to their house at this point. With his family, they would never talk to me again. Its def not good for newlyweds to say the least. Sigh.

I'm currently in law school and am less than thrilled about it. I'm not sure at this point if it's because I don't want to be a lawyer or because I am sick of being in school and mad that I went to law school and the job prospects are not what I expected. It could also be the fact that the bar is waiting for me in July.
So who knows...ask me again in August and maybe by then I will have figured it out.
Juliana,
You are this close, go ahead and finish and take the bar exam. I won't lie, it sucks :-) But even if you don't ever use that degree you have it there in case you want to go that route. Plus, unless your are a rare individual without school loans, it will be easier to pay them off with a law degree then without ;-)
Yea unfortunately I am not one of the lucky ones and have student loans. I will be finishing and taking the bar at this point it would be crazy not to! My barbri bill came last week and I have more work that usual this week which I think has a lot to do with my feelings about the whole thing. Add to that the fact that people keep wanting to tell me how close graduation is...like magically the work will stop then. They all seem to forget about the bar :-) My mom has finally realized she is not to tell me how close I am to being done until July.

My brother went through law school and it was hard for him. He was working full time and not really excited at the prospect of being a lawyer.
Fast forward a few year and he went back to school after he graduated for a degree in computer forensics. He loves it. His law school background is coming in very handy for writing projects and work ethic in general. He has gotten scholarship and grant due to great grades and has an opportunity to go on to a top level masters program after this. His combination of degrees plus work experience will give him excellent job opportunities when he's done with school.
So keep plugging away - a law degree opens up many more doors besides just being a lawyer!

I think I've told you about my in-laws with their Mal. She lives either in a 6x8 kennel or on a tether line. She get's 2 short walks a day after meals and a run to the barn once a day with the ATV. Other than that she gets no play time or constructive work. They've done very little OB with her and it's sketchy and inconsistent. I've warned her time and time again that if they don't get a trainer and stick with it long term and give her something to occupy her mind that one of these days they'll be very sorry. If she ever gets loose she's gonna head for the barn and the llamas and it probably won't be nice. And of course, it will be her fault, not theirs. The breeder lives fairly close to them so anytime they travel Shiloh goes and stays with Rick and he corrects any of her problems - only to return home and not get any continued reinforcement (oh, and what work she does get isn't done with positive reinforcement. It's always in a loud voice and a smack on the butt - it makes me ill).
This has happened twice before with two GSD's. One was a fully trained SAR dog that they ruined. And when she got bored and started going after the llamas they wanted to give her away. They did give the other GSD away only to end up getting her back.
The sad part is they have 160 acres. They could fence a wonderful area for her but they won't. They figure one of these days they'll just be able to let her wander the property. That dog will be off and running in a heartbeat.
I sort of hope that one day she'll be too much for them to handle and she will find an appropriate home, but my MIL so so stubborn (especially after all I've said to her) that Shiloh will just be stuck for life
They keep asking when I'm bringing JD down to stay...not! Only if I go stay at a hotel with him - which I might if I get to go to the Michael Ellis course in Sept. I know they won't understand that, either.
Sheesh!

I repair broken and worn out gold, platinum, and some silver jewelry at my family's jewelry store.
I bring my 2 year old son to work with me everyday, and my sister brings her 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter with her. Sometimes it feels like daycare(Grandma LOVES it.:grin , and I usually end up outside letting them play on the swingset. So I guess I also babysit.
Work has been slow, so I brought my tomato growing operation to work today and started my 'maters from seed. So today I am also a tomato farmer.
I am a farming/babysitting/jewelry repair man.

OMG. A dog with an ear infection is living with constant pain (and I know what earache pain is, never mind a chronic infection); add loneliness.
I would rather take him for a wonderful day with me and then PTS than do what they are doing to this living creature ... this pack animal, living in pain, who needs to be with his pack, his family. That poor dog.
I am so sad for you, because I don't see any answer beyond what you have tried to do. I makes ME cry, and I don't have to go there.
Oh, man .....
eta
I'm sorry. Back on topic .....
