so would now be a good time to purchase Ed's basic obedience tape???
she knows her commands and she is very obedient .. its just that she does not stay for very long, unless im looking at her.
o.k. and now for your prize......
ONE LARGE PORTION OF SLOPPY JOE MIXED W/ MASHED POTATOES, PEAS, AND SPICY BEEF JERKY. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
WHEN WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLECT YOUR PRIZE Mr.Cannon?????? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
just because her hackles are raised does this mean it is definately a nervous act?? why would she charge at the door or person at the door if she were nervous or scared.. she seems to be doing it very confidently.standing her ground.
and again when the person enters she still barks, hackles raised, but she will allow them to pet her and everything. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Squirting water in the face of a dog with possible nerve problems is not the most productive way of handling the situation. It will only cause problems. The purpose of squirting water in the dogs face is to extinguish a behavior by associating it with an unpleasant feeling. If the dog is showing an unusual amount of fear due to nerve issues you should not try to extinguish this as you would a behavioral problem.
Somewhere along the line it was asked whether or not Ed's basic dog obedience tape should be purchased. The answer....a resounding YES! This is the biggest thing. It sounds so simple, but the point is this dog is nervous. What's the best remedy for a nervous dog..OBEDIENCE TRAINING. Instead of just trying to stop the barking let's try and teach the dog what to do instead. Think along those lines.
Squirting might not make the dog afraid of water per se, but it will certainly make the dog distrustful, especially when you've got a container of any sort in your hand
I agree that this dog's reaction sounds a bit fear based, but I wonder if Bounette's stress surrounding the situation, and confusion as to how to handle it, is a contributor?
Good advise Chuck. Obedience can sometimes help a dog like this feel more secure. My reply to Todd's advise was not meant as an insult but it does illustrate the difficulty that one can have assessing the behavior of a dog without being present when the behavior occurs.
