Phar Lap is probably one of my favorite horse movies - second only to The Black Stallion, of course
THERE's your "Phar Lap" post, Kelly !!! And just as I was about to mention "The Black Stallion" -- IMHO one of the most Beautifully Filmed movies EVER
Certainly one of my FAVE books as a Child ... And they surpassed my expectations with the fabulous Cinematography (OMG).
As a direct result of this thread, I looked in my movie collection for "The Black Stallion." I couldn't believe that I apparently don't have it. I will make it a point to fix that soon! Candi, you're right, the cinematography of the movie is breathtaking, especially the first half or so, where there is little dialogue but you don't even miss it with the scenes of the boy and the horse on their deserted island.
The talk of the movie "Secretariat" prompted me to look up his historical win at the Belmont Stakes. Here's the real thing. The announcer estimates that he won by 25 lengths. It was actually 31. I still get shivers down my spine and a lump in my throat every time I see this:
And if you watch the movie, keep an eye out for the cameo appearance by the real-life owner, Penny Chenery (played by Diane Lane in the film).
"Let him run His race, darlin'..." And he was STILL going away (pulling ahead of the runners-up) at the Wire !!! Also, back in the Kentucky Derby, he ran Each Quarter mile FASTER than the one immediately preceding it -- IMHO, we will Never See another like Secretariat in our lifetime.

That brought tears to my eyes. It is just unbelievable.
The owner of Sham, who also finished in the money & was a really great horse as well, exclaimed in AWE while watching Secretariat's unimaginable Belmont run: THAT'S im...pos...si...ble !!!
