I've been looking around the site and haven't found anything on this particular aspect of floppy ears so hopefully someone here can help me out. I have a 6 month old GSD. Both ears were up @ 7 weeks, then up and down for the next several months. My vet has been taping since 5 months with little improvement (6 days on, 1 off, repeat taping). Oscar just stopped losing his teeth last week so hopefully that is the reason for the delay in his ear tip standing up.
However, he is in his crate from 6:30a to 11a, then again from 12p to 5:30p...sometimes even longer. Then again when it's time for bed. I read somewhere on other forums that the crate may be the cause of his limp ear? Is this possible? He's about 60 lbs. in a cage that can accomodate a 110 lb. dog.
If they were up already I wouldnt worry too much. Just keep taping....all the way to the tip! That happens alot during teething. I dont think the crate would be an issue....especially if u r taping. If you are worried about it you could always give him a marrow bone or something else safe to chew on while he's in there....this will cause him to lay down and chew(if your thinking he is sitting up alot and his ears are touching the top of crate). Just an idea.
Also is he on a good diet?
Thanks for the reply. I try not to worry about it, but it's hard not to. Yes, I he is on a good diet...Solid Gold, 1 1/2 cups 3x/day. Eats every bit, plus I allow him to chew on rawhides only when I'm home. He eats so fast, sometimes he chokes on his food and I have to practically hold him upside down to free the lodged food. But anyway...again, thanks for the advice.
Will I wrote an article on ears - its in the main list of training articles on my web site.
The crate is never going to hurt the ears coming up. Leaving the dog out of the crate could reduce the dogs life expectancy when you come how to what you would find without a crate. :-)
