Hi. We got our new puppy yesterday. He is doing well. We just got over him crying in his crate for about 20 minutes. I let him cry. Now, he's sleeping. So, our puppy came to us from the breeder with lice and he smells terribly doggie. He needs a good bath. I can't believe the breeder would not notice. He even delivered the dog and said that he "did not have any fleas or ticks, just dry skin" I am sure he had to know. I took him to the vet today and he gave the puppy the flea and tick medicine. I have a couple of questions. First, are puppies with lice common? How dirty does an environment have to be to have lice? Are there any other concerns I should check for? Second, are there anymore suggestions on what I can do for him. He is obviously miserable, itching all the time. Any advice would be appreciated.
Lice are very itchy and also very contagious. I know when people get them you have to basically boil all the bedding and use special medicine to kill the lice. I'd ask the vet if the lice products they use on children would be safe to use on the dog.
"LIce" are not common in dogs. "Mites" are common. Intense itching usually means sarcoptic mange mites. Also known as "Red Mange". Have your vet do a skin scraping to check for the mites, they are invisible to the naked eye. They are contagious to you as well as your other pets.
Thanks. When we took the puppy to the vet last night the technician confirmed that the bugs were lice. The vet is going to double-check this morning. I think I am going to bring the puppy to the vet today for a good checkup. He has a lot of dry areas and you can see little black dots in his fur, I think it's the eggs. There are lots of scabs where the lice have sucked his blood. They are all over. There is only one spot thats a big scab on his face. I can't tell if he has been scratching the area a lot. He does not seem to be scratching this morning. So, maybe the medication the vet tech gave is working. We will have to see.
Lice can be quite common and it actually has nothing to do with a 'dirty' environment. They are not IN the environment like fleas, so you actually also do not have to worry about de 'licing' the house etc. They may be on bedding but that would only be because some 'dropped' off the puppy. They live thier whole cycle ON the dog etc. If you used the meds on the dog, then don't worry and DON"T over do it. You can get rid of lice by bathing the dog every day for 3 days in a flea/tick shampoo as well. Then repeat this in 2 wks.
If the puppy has had lice for awhile, then it may be a bit anemic, so I would give B vitamins. If you are feeding raw, then more liver etc.
Once the lice are gone, the skin should heal and coat will start to look good again.
