I asked the same question and was told the puppy gets a pass. We just have to get faster. Makes you wonder who's training who I've tied a lanyard to my tug and I'm going to tie one on the new soft sleeve I just got from Ed.
how is that working out? doing your own helper work? I am seen my girl square off against an attacking helper. I dont think I want to be on the receiving end of that bite.
Mike, the mistake people make with doing their own sleeve work comes when they, through inexpierience or just plain stupidity, put the dog in defence. That takes it beyond a game (prey) for the dog. That's where the bond between dog and handler can go down hill.
I work my dogs on a back tie & bite pillow...but they are working in prey drive nothing else. They see it as a game & fun not much different to them then working them with a tug. Will or someone more experienced correct me if I am wrong here ...but you just want to work prey drive & keep it all fun & games. My dogs love it.
If the handler does the agitation work - Can that have a negative effect on the bond that the dog has with its handler?
Agitation is something totally different. This is a seperate step for the dog to focus on the man and not the equipment. You need a more experienced person to weigh in on this, but once my dog has basics of the bite work down and the grip : I want to get him on a decoy/helper. Different dogs at different stages are worked differently due to their maturity level , training and genetics, so its kinda hard to give a concrete answer. Jeff or Will could probably sum it up better than I.
I asked both Ed and B. Flinks about this since I live a long way from any helper. The answer was the same both times; as long as you are working in prey drive, the handler/dog bond can be enhanced. But work in defensive drive will hurt this bond. That part makes since for sure since it can't be good for the dog to think of its handler as a serious threat.
Cowboys stay in the saddle just a little bit longer.
