My charger died. Is there anything special about the charger that Dogtra uses?
The nameplate data on the existing charger seems to indicate it's a pretty generic 12V DC, 300ma AC-DC transformer. The vendor is Anoma Electric and the model is AEC-4112B.
I am really looking for for electrical characteristics. Some chargers will read the existing voltage level and adjust their charge rate based on that. For example, they can run a lower charge rate for deeply discharged batteries. Others will float the charging voltage to maintain a constant charge rate. Others will will just regulate to a constant voltage.
I suspect this is just a plain DC power supply without any smarts in the circuits.
I took advantage of the break in bowl game reruns on ESPN and opened up the Dogtra battery charger. As I suspected, it's just a dumb power supply with no voltage regulation smarts.
FWIW, the contents included a 120VAC-12VAC transformer (primary winding was smoked), a 1000 micro-farad capacitor to smooth the power output, and a bridge rectifier to convert the AC to DC.
Glad to hear your collar is still working well. It's always good to let someone else do the smoke testing.
Now that I've satisfied myself the charger isn't anything special, I'll head down to Radio Shack or WalMart.
About the only odd thing on the circuit was the small capacitor soldered in parallel with each diode. I suspect those helped smooth the ripple on the output.
I looked up the prices on the official Dogtra replacement. They want about $25 for that 'Made in China' thingy. The transformers are probably about $2 each coming off the boat. Nice profit margin.
I killed three chargers and the mfg replaced them at no charge. I suspect that pluging several collars on one charger (with pigtail splitters) was a bit too much.
