First, I hope I have put this under the right forum, my apologies if I haven't. I purchased a great pup from a kennel several months ago. I thought I did my homework. I checked around, found out good things about them, checked with BBB, online consumer complaints, researched the parents, etc before I even went to see the pup. I went, I saw, I fell in love and I bought for a substantial sum of money. The breeder provided me with a contract that specifically states that the pup was AKC registered. The breeder told me that she would register the puppy in my name online and I would receive the papers within a few days. That's been many months ago. For weeks I sent inquiries and my emails went unanswered. Finally I threatened legal action and the very next day I received a reply that there had been a problem with the sire's registration. One of the papers had not been sent to her. I accepted that answer and decided to give her another few weeks to get the paperwork in order. I received another email from her on Dec. 23rd stating that she faxed the paperwork into AKC and I should have the papers within two weeks. Well, two weeks was up and I received an email from someone else who purchased a pup from the same litter. She had the same problem....no AKC papers. However, the story she was given as to the reasons why were completely different from what I was told. I went back thru emails and found a couple of inconsistencies with the breeder's story that I didn't catch the first time around. First, by telling me that she would register the puppy in my name online for me led me to believe that the litter registration had already been completed. But, her first email to me stating there was a problem with some paperwork not being sent contradicted what she had told me. So, she lied???? I found out tonight that the dam of the litter wasn't even registered with AKC until about a week ago!
I have emailed the breeder giving her a deadline of January 15th to provide either the AKC papers or correspondence from AKC proving that the litter is registerable or my attorney would begin legal action the very next day after the deadline. I am trying to be very accurate and I want to have a complete understanding of registering dogs so that I am fully prepared.
Could anyone provide me with an explanation of what is involved in registering a litter of puppies with a foreign registration? Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? Stories of similar problems? I really hate to do this to this breeder and kennel but I feel like I am completely out of options. Any opinions or advice would really be appreciated.
I would call the AKC offices in NC and talk to them. Maybe they can give you some assistance with this problem. Usually, unless the pup in question is show quality and sold as such so that the breeder wants to give it it's registered name, the breeder registers the litter and gives the purchaser all the properly signed papers to register the pup.
I would call and ask the AKC if the litter has been registered or if perhaps registration was denied or removed.
Hi Lori!
Here is what I had to do to register my litter that came out of a breeding that took place in Germany.
After buying the female I had to get what is called a Bescheinigung from the SV in Germany. This is a letter from the SV to AKC telling them that as of a certain date, I was the owner of such and such (registration#, name of dog) dog. In order to get the Bescheinigung a letter has to be sent to the SV requesting it. Along with the letter a notarized copy of the original SV papers has to be sent.
After getting the Bescheinigung from the SV this has to be sent to AKC with a AKC Foreign Registration Application (this is online or they will mail it to you).
This all is to get the female registered here with AKC. This is necessary because without her being AKC registered the pups will not be able to be registered.
Once the female is AKC registered and the litter gets here you will have to get a Foreign Litter Application and send it in, with a copy of the sires papers and a breeding report certifying that this breeding took place overseas.
That is what I had to do and it was actually very easy. Once I read through all of it and took my time doing it. It did take just a little time however. In my case the broker that sold me the female had already taken care of the German end and all I had to do was submit all the info to AKC.
Hope this helps.
In case this is an import pup you will still have to get a Bescheinigung before being able to register with AKC. That is what I am doing now and so far it seems pretty straightforward.
Email me if you have any more questins.
