Yet another Q on the Flinks method... in Ed's first Flinks video, he mentions that Bernhard will often, at his seminars, tell trainers to, "use their voice". I am in fact doing this when building drive, but, do I continue to build the dog up with my voice while she is in a sitz or platz and focusing on me; or should I remain quiet when she is focusing? There is a portion in the video where Bernhard is standing in front of Itor and dangling and moving the ball on a string in front of Itor's face, but is Bernhard still talking to the dog at this point in his method of training?
Bernard uses the term "use your voice" for multiple reasons.
He has a method of pronouncing his commands to cue the dog to the next command ( such as using a lengthened "Fuuuuss" to cue the dog that a sit in motion will be expected of it next )
The times that I've seen Bernard talking to Itor in the situation that you described at different seminars, it sounded like soft motivational "chatter" that helped keep the dog focused - not that Itor seemed to need it.
Thanx Will, that is just the sort of straight forward answer I was keeping my fingers crossed for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
So when Bernhard would command; "Fuuusss", is that the command or would it be more like, "Fuussss -- SIT!"..?
Sounds like a drill command almost.. stand - at - EASE! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
It's the intial command to get the dog into motion ( the starting "fusss" ) that is the portion that is changed depending on the end exercise.
For instance:
Sit in motion exercise - "Fuuusss" ( to alert the dog that it'll be required to sitz soon ), walking the required distance ( 10 to 15 paces in SchH ), then the normal command "Sitz"
In a different exercise ( such as the Plotz in motion followed by the recall ) he might train the dog to alert to the upcoming plotz with a "fuss" - just slightly drawn out.
