One subject I have not seen addressed here is the feeding of rabbits. (Not live). They are fairly inexpensive to raise and quite prolific. Has anyone fed rabbit meat/bones? Any thoughts on why/why not? Any parasite problems? What about bone density/ protein values as compared to beef or chicken?
I get mine preground with the organs intact. It's expensive but I have one dog with what appears to be a food allergy and rabbit is the first thing she has really done well on.

Wow! I had never seen that site. I know it was an answer to Becky, but thank you! They have stuff there that I had *no idea* you could order online, ground and frozen and everything included.
Good source of protein, dogs chow down the bones just like chicken bones, and they are a lot easier to raise and clean/dress than most any other animal alive.
Lamb is a pain in the arse, chicken is a SERIOUS pain in the arse, so I like rabbit. They are cheap, easy, and reproduce. . .like rabbits.
I think raising rabbit meat is a great idea for raw feeders, or anyone who likes the meat. I really enjoy rabbit myself, so it wasn't a stretch to feed it to the dogs.
One of the best meals I had in Europe this summer was a roast rabbit, BTW. I can't help but share this story. I was in Germany, I had just gotten out of the freaking hospital with a fairly serious health issue, and was alone. My family had travelled on to the Czech Republic without me. I managed to find a really great German hole-in-the-wall eatery and they only had one main dish a night. It was roast rabbit. You don't usually roast rabbit because it gets dry as hell because it is a lean meat. But this rabbit was smothered with seasoned lard (inside and out) and stuffed with onions, herbs, lemons, etc. Then it was slow roasted. It was served with those nice thin pan fried potatos that you can get with almost any homestyle meal in Germany.
It was very good and so was the local wine that it was served with (that I never found out the name or type of). Later that night I found out that the chef was actually a Greek man named Nikos, it wasn't really a German dish at all. LOL Here I had thought I found some really German little place and was eating some kind of homemade recipe for rabbit. . .but the whole time it was a Greek guy who made German food with a Greek/Turkish influence.
Wow I never thought of feeding rabbit to the dogs. I have thought several times of switching to raw as I have an organic chicken farmer fairly close to my house....but I have a rabbit farmer(can you call them that?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> ) even closer like 10 min. away. huh never thought of it. I'll have to check it out.
I was just looking at that Hare today site, and people pay $1.99lb for ground chicken/bones/organs? The guy that raises the organic chickens was going to sell me the same thing for 0.50cents/lb. Maybe I should take him up on his offer.....
