Ho ho ho. I get it: I have a good memory, except it's short. (I have an excuse. I am almost as old as Old Earth Dog Bob!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Yesterday and today we practiced using a word for potty. "Potty," in fact. I used to just say "OK" to release them from heel, and that encompassed potty, sniff, inspect, etc. But this new issue is off lead, so I had to address it in a new way.
So now I said "Good potty" every time he did that on the walk, so he would learn the new word. Next I will say "potty" when he's let out off lead, instead of just opening the door.
So basically I'm doing your suggestion, Ann, of clarifying that clapping means come and "potty" means potty.
And I hope this works, because until this recent behavior, we had a 100% reliable "come" command (the clapping). If it doesn't work, it will be the long line that Susan suggested. And of course, Anne is correct about leadership, and I will keep it in mind. I'm pretty sure that we have that down pat, because of all the basic obedience training I've done, but it reminded me to stay sharp! Obviously, I have become lax or unclear somewhere, or we wouldn't have this issue.
all i will say is, 1) it's hell to get old. and 2) please let all us dumb-butts know what works, 'cause if it's not in writing, we'll (I'LL) never remember it.
have to have someplace to go for the "search" function to work... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Ann, Getting old isn't near as bad as the alternative. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Oops..........I was afraid you'd see that post eventually! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Yeah, you're right. The weather's rotten here today, but it's still a great day to be above ground!

I have been using the new word "potty" each time he went, during and right after, so he'd learn what it meant.
Tonight I just let him out (off lead) and said "potty!" and I swear he immediately chose a pee spot and smiled at me as he let loose. Then I said "Good potty!" and then clapped, and he ran right in.
I gave him a particularly yumbo treat the minute he got to the door.
I can't swear that the whole thing is solved this fast, but it sure is moving in the right direction! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I know it's a very minor thing, but it's still really nice to correct a new issue so easily and pleasantly.
