Hi all, I'm new to this post i've been reading these post's for awhile now but we have a problem with one of our sheltie's, one sheltie is about 8 yrs old and the other sheltie is about 5, it's the younger one that has us going crazy, she keeps eating the older dogs feces, were outside constantly picking any of it up, but I've seen the younger dog also trying to eat her's as well, isn't there anything that will stop a dog from this awfull habbit ? we have tried manny things that vet's have told us to do and people in the pet smart store as well but nothing seems to stop the yonger dog...help... thanks. Karl
Try adding a little plain canned pumpkin to their food. There are also products that you can buy and sprinkle on the food including Accent but I've found that pumpkin works best in my experience and has the added benefit of being healthy. You shouldn't need more than a teaspon or two. It makes the poop taste bad to the dog. It may take a few days to work. Prevention, cleaning up the feces as soon as possible, and teaching the dog a leave it command should be the other half of the equation.
To add to Elaine's post... be sure you add the agent to every dogs food! Not just the offending dog.
You might also consider an e-collar correction. If you go this route make sure to desensitized the dog to the collar before you correct him. Otherwise you'll have to wire him everytime he goes out in the yard.
Thank you Elaine and Bradley, we have tried accent with no success, and quite alot of other things, but pumpkin we haven't tried, thanks and to feed both dogs is what we did with the accent, and thanks hope this helps. Karl
