heavens to betsy!! i think that terry and jenni are kinda talking at cross-purposes here--in a way.
terry runs PSD man-hunting dogs for the OK State Patrol (i think--am i right, Terry?). he runs basically coonhounds, and jenni is talking about sport tracking w/mr. Caleb. apples to oranges: sport vs. real-life. and, 2 different styles of tracking/finding and 2 types of dogs doing the work.
bottom line: apples/oranges. both have their application, however
Actually, no. I'm specifically talking about NOT sport tracking. I'm not doing anything sport-related with Caleb at all. Caleb is not a sporty-fun-games type of a guy .
Off lead trailing IS an established method around the mountains of NC.
There ARE dogs who work onlead (mainly bloodhounds) but most work off lead and they usually start with off lead trailing, with development in longer and older problems, and progress to becoming scent discriminitory air scent work as well to become all around area search dogs.
Not wannabees - folks who have been doing this for over 20 years, average about 70 callouts a year, have a good find rate.
This does seem very much to be a regional thing. In much of the country air scent dogs do not scent discriminate and trailing dogs are completely separate discipline than air scent dogs and always worked on lead.
Here is an article on off lead trailing. I don't think you can attribute this trainer to having developed the technique but it does describe it.
Will, you are absolutely correct, our methods would not fit most individuals or depts. program, this is designed for the apprehension of only violent and dangerous criminals in mostly rural areas. The reason we started this program is that other methods wasn't working for us. This does, our record is well documented. Anyway, I enjoyed reading the responses. Good hunting to all.
Wow...I'm curious to know, too. I've been involved in SAR in Georgia for over 12 years. I'd like to think I'm acquainted with almost every dog handler, at least in north Georgia - most have passed through my FUNSAR classes or SARTECH evals - but I've never seen or heard of anything like that here.
