My 13 mos old GSD just came back from the vet where I found out he has a heart murmur!!!! I was hoping to do some PP work with him and then use him for starting my own kennel. Guess that has just fallen into the toilet. I will still work on the PP work, maybe look in to some SAR or ASR, but was so looking forward to breeding him. Any advice about what I do now would be greatly appreciated. Do I contact the breeder and let them know of the genetic flaw, and is there anything they can or should do to compensate me. Again any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Terry
I'm sorry I can't be of help here...but can I ask you about the timing? Do you know why the vet didn't hear the murmur sooner? Is a murmur something that comes out later on (13 months or so) or is it possible your vet missed it when he was younger?

I hope others will address the breeder responsibility issue. (I mean the breeder who sold you the dog; you are of course correct that you won't breed the dog.)
About the murmur itself: "Murmur" is a big blanket term that covers many different degrees of seriousness, from something a young dog can actually grow out of to something that can lead to heart failure.
I've done some reading about canine heart murmurs. Two thing I learned: The loudness of a murmur does not necessarily correlate with its seriousness, and the prognosis depends largely on what kind of murmur it is.
These web pages will give you a lot of information:
Ask your vet about the severity of it,etc. I had a dog with a very audible heart murmur and he lived for 15 years as a sled dog with it(he was euthanized at 15 for complications from a spinal injury).
