I am having trouble finding an airline that will ship a #500 size crate. Delta insists that a Dutch Shepherd is too big for #400 and many of their aircraft don't take the larger crates. Other airlines have a 70lb. weight limit, including the crate, which is not enough. Anyone have any experience that might help? Alternatively, I am looking for a dog transport service that someone has first hand experience with and can recommend. Thanks a lot!
Cindy, the problem is often more of the airport site - where I live, the Tallahassee airport will only accept a 400 crate as they only have those "puddle jumper" size aircraft that head off to a real airport, like Atlanta.
To ship a dog in a 500 crate, I have to go to Atlanta or jacksonville, both almost four hours away.
Grrrrrrr,.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
please pardon my ignorance, but it's been too long: what's the dimensional dif between a 100--200 crate? reason i'm asking, i'm having a pup shipped and need some input as to whether i want a 100 vs 200. haven't a clue. pup's 8 wks, BTW. thanks!
sorry-slightly ot...

MED/300 series 32 x 22 x 23 18 lb.

XLG/500 series 40 x 27 x 30 31 lb.
GIANT/700 series (Accepted as cargo only)
I just flew to West Palm beach on delta with a #500 crate. I had to do a little research to make sure that the individual planes could accomadate the crate. Other than that it went smooth on delta.

This isn't first hand, and it's about shipping the dog rather than flying with, but several members of our training club have had good things to say about Delta Dash, a counter-to-counter service for live cargo.
The best airline I have found is Continental, they keep the animal in a climate controlled environment at all times and seem to genuinely care for its well being.
Some airports are small (like Fresno) thus (depending on airline, too) they do not accomodate the size jets required to ship larger cargo, i.e. big crates.
I was a fan of Continental for shipping, but more and more I'm finding that the people that they have working the terminal desks are complete idiots.
Maybe they have some weird move to hire the mentally disabled, but my time is valuable and they've lost my business.
And I ship * alot* of dogs. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
