ahhhh...the joys of training a dog with good genetics for protection!
I am now training my first Leerburg dog for my PP business and this is the quickest training for a dog with little to no bitework that I've ever worked.
She has the advantage of being a three year old, she'll go civil, will engage a sleeve and a bitesuit already with vigor. And that's in the *first* week of training.
Training a dog with good genetics is a flippin' joy in my line of work! This is so much easier to train a sound dog like this that enjoys the work instead of working a dog provided by a client that doesn't have the genetics for the work ( where you're always walking that fine line between what the dog can handle versus sending it into avoidance...that's a much, much harder form of work with a dog )
Nice job, Ed....breed more of these, would you?

Will, is there a picture on your site of the Leerburg dog?
How much of a factor is the age? There is a young Leerburg dog (one year or so) at the Ring club in Denver. He has
improved over the last six months, but I have been underwhelmed with his drive. My Dobermanns are easier to train (for me, at least) and my six month old Dutchie male
has 10x the drive. Different strokes for different folks,
but if the Leerburg dog at the Ring Club was mine? He would
have been sent back. I'm not familiar with the guarrantee
that came with the dog.
Tom,
The age is always a factor, I'm sure. I really can't even do an accurate selection test on a dog under the age of 18 months, and I'd rather have them at the two year old mark as maturity plays such a factor for pp training.
With the time and effort it takes to produce one of these ppd's, I can't make mistakes about their basic drives and temperaments, so I'm pretty demanding during the selection phase.
Of course I'm also noted as a slow starter for my dogs in training, I often don't even do any true bite work until the dog is at least a year old.
So my way may be a little out of step with how people do that type of training nowadays, but I scrap out less dogs over time using my method, so I'm happy with it.
