Ok I have a weird question and there wasn't really a catagory this fit under.
I'm fostering a German Shepherd puppy who is 10 weeks old and named Otto. Otto is purebred, though from backyard bred stock...an accidental breeding. The owners owned both parents but didn't want the puppies so they left the mother at the rescue and they fostered her at an animal sancutary until she had her puppies. Well she ended up having them early and the caregivers had to go out and find the litter of puppies in the enclosure she was in. At least thats the history on him that I've been told...
Anyways, Otto grew up just fine and has a home waiting for him, he's just getting over a case of pneumonia. But the question is about his ear. One is standing just fine but the other is not. And I don't think its normal like other German Shepherds, where is just flopped down. The ear is actually folded backwards, with the tip of the ear touching the base. It looks like he's missing an ear but its there, just tightly folded up against itself. Its very hard to describe but the cartalige looks like its been bent permenately backwards.
I'm curious about a few things though. Could this be genetic or the result of an injury before they found the puppies? Could it correct itself (it doesn't look like it will) and if it doesn't, is it something that will need surgery to correct?
I just went through the same thing with my GSD. His right ear was folded backwards, and I thought there was something drastically wrong. In a few days, both ears were standing straight up. Now, one ear is flopping forward half way down. Don't worry. It is very normal for the ears to do that. They will look different at different times through the teething process. It does look funny, but even though it takes some dogs longer than others to get the ears up, (sometimes up to 5 or 6 months)they usually stand in time. Also, they can be standing straight up for a few days, and then one or both will flop. There are many reasons for this, but usually it is nothing to worry about. Be patient, and give him lots of love...Of course!
If you would like to learn about GSD ears - go to my web site list of training articles. There is an article on getting ears to stand up. http://leerburg.com/articles.htm This thread is closed
