Today I noticed one of the pads on my 6mo old gsd has fallen off. I am not talking about the pad on his feet. The pad is located on the inner side of his front right leg (about 2 inches above his foot pads (the other side looks like it has a pad and possibily a claw coming out of it). Does this naturally fall off or could this be an injury?
Sounds like he has injured his dewclaw - it is like a little toe that has no real function. These can get caught on things when the pup is playing or can get torn when the dog punches through crusty snow or whatnot. If it doesn't seem to be causing any lameness or real distress to the dog you did the right thing and just keep it clean and watch out for infection. Next time you see your vet you might want to see about getting the dewclaws removed.
It looks like the dew claw came completely off. It just looks like a moist meaty flat area with no bleeding. Is there anything else to remove on the side that came off? Should I see a vet about it? (I may go to the vet tommorrow anyway)
My pup is not in any distress and doesnt seem to be in any pain.
If the wound is healing well then you don't need to the see the vet. In many breeds the dew claws are removed because they serve no purpose and as you can now attest to, they can be torn off. If this pup is playing where there are branchs, rocks, etc you might have the vet remove the other one as Lynn suggested.
I will keep an eye on my pups missing dewclaw. If my pup shows no signs of distress/infection, I will take no action. Next time I am at the vet, I will inquire about the removal of the other dew claw. Theres lots of branches in my yard my pup runs thru .....also I think he's been trying to hop one of the fences chasing the racoons which are probably the cause of the torn dew claw.
E Wong : i would just clean the area with a mild soap and water to clean the dirt out ,then i would leave it alone to heal and as long as you see no swelling or major bleeding ,or bad smelling stuff coming from it . And as the others have said you might want to get the other one removed as soon as you can ,so they can heal fast while the pup is still young.Peter
