Use a fine choke chain. I've show trained a good dozen Great Danes and Dane puppies. If you keep the lead high on the neck, control isn't an issue. I never had a chain break on me, but the leads occassionally are an issue because if there is enough room for the dog to make one good lunge, it'll snap. I would not use a prong to show train. Use the correct show collar and keep control of the head while stacking.
If you need help, PM me and I can give you more advice on show training. Like I said, I've show trained a TON of great danes of various ages.
Lisa,
I am a huge fan of the micro prong collars even for larger (short-haired) dogs. I have used them on a 60 lb GSD, a 30 lb pit mix a 60 lb dobe mix. I staked out the dobe mix on a short leash and the micro prong in my front yard to take photos of her - she saw a feral cat and bolted. She snapped the clip of the leash - micro prong collar was not damaged at all.
I am guessing this does not apply to your pup at all, but another observation I have made with the micro prong collars is that they are so fine that the vibration of a growl can be felt in the leash and corrected before the growl is audible to humans.
I can't say if this is the "right" collar for your dog, but I can say that I have been impressed by their quality and strength. I imagine that if a micro was not fit high and tight, the dog would be able to bend the links of the collar.
Thank you all for your help and advice and as Mike pointed out when I said ringcraft I meant show training classes (sorry to confuse you Ingrid).
Thanks Again,
Lisa
