I am going to give Oli-Pet to Malik for his allergies. Not sure any of you know about the product, here is a link to the technical bulletin http://www.thensome.com/olipet.htm and I found a good site to buy it http://www.shopusanimal.com/welaffiliate.html . It is an Olive Leaf supplement that seems really good. If anyone has feedback on this, I'd love to read you.
Thanks!

From what I've read (which is not a ton), this is more of an antibiotic that an anti-inflammation agent.
So while it's probably a fine supplement, I think it's an entirely different "angle" from the anti-inflammatory supplements such as Omega 3 EFAs and Vitamin E (among others).
I haven't used olive leaf extract yet, but have not so far read of any downsides. If you decide to use it, I'm thinking that it might be best used in addition to (not instead of) salmon oil with Vitamin E for an allergic dog. It might be good for the secondary infections that allergies and the associated itchies can trigger, so it might address one side of allergies while anti-inflammatories address another.
Just some first thoughts, and I'm not a health professional. Thank you for that link, which I had not seen and will definitely read!

It is suggested as a kind of natural antibiotic, as opposed to an anti-inflammatory agent. It's also supposed to cure an awful lot of ailments, in so wide a range that I'd like to do a little more research. (You know how it when something seems too good to be true, it usually is? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
But still, there's loads of info out there about it, and I haven't see any serious downside. Your dog has skin pruritis, right, that might be secondary to allergies? So according to the book, it would be an appropriate supplement against the infected skin (although not the allergy, if there is one).
If you have read a different slant, I'd love to see it. (I really appreciate this kind of info.)
My vet (Dr. Martin Goldsteins's practice at Smith Ridge in SO. Salem, NY) gave my male a homeopathic remedy with Olive leaf (& some other remedies)for a slight urinary tract infection. It is my understanding that it is a natural antibiotic. He would prefer to use it for this problem as opposed to regular antibiotics as the first line of defense & then regular antibiotics if this doesn't take care of the infection. They don't want to use antibiotics if not necessary, just like human doctors. I don't know if it would be appropriate as a 'treatment' for allergies. You should consult with a holistic vet before using any homiopathic remedies....they can be toxic & dangerous if used inappropriately, just like any other drugs. Just my 2 cents.

Good recap, IMHO. Thank you, Anne, and this *will* be a subject on my to-do list for more research! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> There is a lot more out there about olive leaf extract than I expected.
May I ask: Was it effective against your dog's UTI?
Well, I think it would help him with his allergies. It seems he has a yeast problem, so I am suspecting his immune system needs a boost. It's worth a try anyways. I'm not using the homeopathic version; I have worked with homeopathics quite a bit with my holistic vet, but no results. At this point, I'm doing a lot of my own research too and Oli-Pet is a good option, since there is so much information about it. I might post later if I see a change.
Thanks for all this info!
