My male Working GSD is now 9 months old. I have been taking him to protection training classes every other week and practice at home. I have several of Ed's CD's on Bite Work for Puppies, Grip and Focus etc. Lately, he started whining and seems to get too excited when doing prey work with the tug. The whining is probably from nerves...he was fine before. I do not overdue the sessions. Never having a GSD before, could this be a phase he is going through? He does come from SCH3 backgrounds. Thanks for any input.

Some dogs with very good nerves make a ton of noise while on the tug/ sleeve.
If it is a nerve issue, the dog should be showing signs of conflict that some experienced obserers should be able to pick up.
Here is another idea. When you have a good dog, helpers tend to put a lot of pressure on too early. Tell the guy working him to use less pressure, and make the work shorter. 9 months isn't that old, and he (the helper) is causing the problem. Super easy to fix.
There are lines of dogs that are known to make alot of noises when in prey drive. Have heard some call it the Fero screech but I have read it can come thru linebreeding dogs like Aly vom Vordersteinwald,Afra vom Stoppenberger Land,Randa von Karthago,Greif zum Lahntal and Sagus vom Busecker Schloss.
My female Ava is 5-5 Grief zum Lahntal and has Afra in her pedigree. When she gets her prey drive stirred up I can't discribe the high pitch noise she makes especially when frustrated. She doen't make any noise while on the sleeve.
and there are lines known to make little or no noise at all. example: urs aus dem hopfenstrasse. his owner said that he would not bark, even in the blind, and that he had seen this trait in his offspring as well.
I had a male like this once and the older he got the worse he became i was told it was just his high drive and it wasnt a problem.....he only did it when he knew he was about to work.......

Thanks for the input...it may just be him. The trainer/helper has been good about taking it slow. He whines when we are outside and I am working him. At class he is more focused on what is going on.
