I am trying to housebreak my 8 week old GDS. She spends the majority of her time in her crate. All interaction with her is done outside. I take her out every 15 minutes to an hour. I get up during the night to go bring her outside. I will literally watch her while she sleeps so I can catch her immediately when she wakes up to go outside. The problem is that while she does not poop in her crate (knock on wood), she pees in it all the time. She does not have room to pee on one side and lay on the other; she pees right where is lying. As soon as she wakes up, she stands up and pees, even as I am opening the door to take her out. As soon as I bring her outside, I tell her to go potty outside and she pees in the yard, even if she just peed in her crate. I praise her with “good go potty outside” (I know it sounds a little ridiculous, but I have a 2 year old <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />. I went to the grocery store yesterday. I was gone 1 hour and 15 minutes. I took her outside right before I left and right when I got home. She had already peed in her crate before I got back.

It has been so long since I had a puppy that I don’t remember if this is normal. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Will the light go off in her head that she will be taken out, so just hold for a little while? I know that puppies can’t hold it for long, but she should be able to hold it for an hour. BTW, she is fine in her crate…she does not howl or go crazy while in there. She will either fall right to sleep or just lay there watching what goes on in the house.

I don’t want her to get accustom to lying in pee. What should I do??

first of all, it sounds like you're doing everything right.I am also house training a pup for someone. she is doing awesome with it but accidents do happen after all a pup is just a baby. Some do take more time than others though. Maybe you need to take her to the vet and make sure theres not a problem. i once had a pup i couldnt train in the crate. you could put her in the crate and she would look at you and pee right there. I hope thats not the case with you. anyway give her time she will get it....

sometimes it helps to take liquids away at suppertime; letting the pup have what they want to drink during the day, but nothing after supper. also, puppy may need to spend longer periods of time outside so she can get her business done. you may be surprised in a couple of week. all at once she may decide she doesn't like laying in pee and will put together the connection of going outside to relieve herself. best of luck.

sounds to me like you're doing everything you can--except taking her to the vet to rule out UTI. if she's peeing that often, it should be no problem to take her, get a urine sample; a quick stick test will rule out or confirm UTI. that's the FIRST thing i would do in this situation, anyway.
