I follow the "no petting" rule and in general when working with my pups, keep them interested in tug/ball and food and casually walk away from people who are approaching, usually with their straining dog, to harass us. I'm known as the antisocial dog owner in our building, and I think there are actually people who think I might be deaf, I simply ignore them and the goings on around.
If you are not more interesting than the rest of the world, of course your dog will be attracted to everything but you! Try making every outing an exercise in positive training and focus. One of the best dog trainers I know has a pack of about 12 dogs, all completely focused on her and oblivious to the other dogs or people around her... And she does it positively, not by making the dog more suspicious of strangers, but by making herself more appealing to the dogs.
I don't know anymore, Will just sold me a very social dog who likes to work and has excellent nerves, if anybody pets him, he doesn't care, maybe it depends on the dog.
I think I will have to control her behavior somewhat, but also, I think you are right and that it may all just disappear when she is mature. ACD's are known for being suspicious of people. So we'll see.
Just my experience with my ACD--he's one of the odd ones in that he loves everyone. But--and this is a big but--after he got past about 18 or 20 mths, he stopped wanting to be petted by everyone he came within 10 feet of and sort of reverted to "If Mom says it's okay, I'll come over and let you love on me, but as soon as she indicates it's time to go I'm gone, just so's you know." And he did that all by himself. So definitely don't let her jump up on people, but I wouldn't worry too much.
