When training a 8 - 12 week pup as a Schutzhund and/or French Ring prospect, is it better to focus on a great grip on one prey item or on getting the pup comfortable holding many textures of items in its mouth (metal, plastic, leather, jute, bite suit material, wood)? Your thoughts? (I'm leaning towards multiple textures.)
Textures, IMO... But I'd keep BOTH in mind. In general I have my dogs retrieving metal early on before they realize they hate it.
My pup runs around with metal pliers without a second thought, drags around a jute puppy sleeve, as well as a bite-suit material sleeve, leather rags, shoes, velcro, newspapers, newspapers in plastic bags, rubber balls, tennis balls, ropes, carboard boxes, TV remotes (oops), anything that fits in her mouth. Do I work on grip too? Sure I do, why not do both? Build drive for a specific toy and work on the bite as well as letting em carry weird stuff?
If your working toward a particular sport, I would build my grip foundation on the material that the dog will be competing on. Working the "hold" or retrieve is another matter all together. I don't see the point in working on the grip with different textures. What is the point? Is the dog going to attack a tree? or a cow?.....well maybe a Malinois...if it's a good one...ha..ha..

I don't work on grip on the weird things, but I teach her to hold stuff. In ASR you never know what the evaluator decides to make your dog retrieve I do grip work on puppy bite rags n sleeves n wedges.
I just like to expose my dogs to as much weird stuff, however impractical it is, as possible, that includes being able to carry and bite anything, or walk on any surface.
