We use a FURminator, which we just got; it's brilliant for undercoat removal, the amounts we've removed are amazing. Not cheap but well worth the money. See: http://leerburg.com/1072.htm Roger

I don't have a GSD, but I have an English Springer Spaniel and we used to shave her back and I HATED it. It didn't have the nice, smooth, sleek look or texture -- she looked like a black and white cotton ball. I would get a Mars Coat King to take care of that undercoat. That's going to help him keep cool.
