P.S. - When using the medicine you want to use only enough to firm up the stool, any more than that is just wasteful. A good rule thumb is a teaspoon to three cups of food. A bottle lasts a long time.
The dog's stool can change in consistency from other factors while on the medecine, stress, exercise, etc. Do not let one loose stool cause you to rethink your dosage.
Finally, look at the ingredients in the dog food you are using. If the main ingredients are corn and chicken and poulry by products (head, feet, guts) use something else. Your dog will only digest 20% of the food.
Switch to Nutro's Natural Choice Lamb and Rice (the green bag). It may cost more but your dog will digest 80% of that food and you will use less. Also, Lamb and Rice is much easier on his digestive system and for a dog with EPI it's very important to feed him a good food.
Terry, my prayers go out to you and your family. I know how hard this must be on you and I know all too well the pain that comes with this. I will continue to pray for you and in your heart, you will know what you and your dog needs. As I was told in this forum only last month when struggling to put my dog down...only I know what is the best thing for him/her. I'm sure you will too and God willing these meds will give him a long happy life if the results come in positive. Hang in there! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The test result came back positive for EPI !!!!!!! I was told that the enzyme range was between 5 and 35. Coach is producing .4 I will be contacting a friend who is a Vet in another city to further discuss my options and what is in the best interest of the dog.
That's exactly where my dog scored on his EPI test. He was diagnosed at age one, he lived for eight years until he died from cancer.
He is and will always be the best dog I will ever own. His life was never impacted by EPI. He lived every day to the fullest, had more drive than any dog, was a fast as a race horse, and more loving than you could ever imagine.
EPI truly is not a big deal, I speak from my own epxerience of dealing with the disease. I would even go so far as to not call it a disease.
EPI in a strange way can be a real blessing. In a dog with EPI his pancreas is not functioning properly (i.e. producing enough enzymes to digest food) his pancreas is not functioning because his adrenal gland is always on. So the byproduct that you will see is a dog that is always "on" a dog with more drive than any other and one that will never show his age.
My dog never grew old, he ran his whole life at full speed was never in pain, and now is with God. I will see him again.
Terry, I am glad my dog had EPI, why? Because I never had to see him get "old" he remained a young "fired up" dog his entire life, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. More importantly, he wouldn't have wanted it any other way either.
In life, God does not give you the dog you want, he gives you the dog that you need.
